Not bad but August 19, 2008 L. Johnson This Merlin story is OK, but definitely not worth 5 stars that it regularly seems to get. It is actually difficult to write a review for this since I have no strong feelings about it, there is nothing brilliant, but neither is it entirely terrible. There are a couple of minor niggles - the writing style irritated me regularly, but I would probably have to do a degree in English Literature to explain why. The very silly sentence constructions of the various non-human creatures seemed almost racist. Too strong a word to be sure, but do all non human races have to speak so badly? The other point is Merlin himself. I had the feeling he spent a lot of time resting on laurels he hasn't got yet. Sure, we know Merlin is going to be a brilliant wizard, but why is this so apparent to everyone else in the story. The result is a number of situations which don't come across too believably. Probably OK for a light read, but don't expect it to blow you away.
Excellent fantasy reading (from a Welsh reader!) May 16, 2007 Florrie 22 (UK) I picked this book up in a charity sale at work as I've always been fascinated by the tales of King Arthur, and thought that my nephew might enjoy it. Even though it looked like a children's book - the synopsis intrigued me - and I thought I'd read a few pages before passing it on (after all , I really enjoyed Harry Potter!!). I couldn't put it down 'til I reluctantly reached the end - it was brilliant!!! If you enjoy fantasy, myths & legends, magic & mystery and vivid, imaginative writing you will not be disappointed! Wonderful! Buy it now, you're in for a treat! I was delighted to find that this is only the first of a series and they were all available on Amazon - I couldn't find them anywhere else as I think they are printed in the USA - I instantly ordered the lot and can't wait to read them. (I don't understand why this author is not more popular over here (UK).)I also ordered a few copies of this book for friends and relatives!!! Thank you Amazon and thank you T A Barron for giving me one of the most enjoyable reads ever!!!!
A young boy tries to find about his past. April 12, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a book that tells the adventure of one boy that is trying to find out who he is. He will go through hard, sad, and happy times. He finds many friends on his way and he also loses some. He will suffer hard challenges and ecounter large obstacles. For those of you who like magical and mystical stories this book is for you. This boy is blessed with special talents just like many people but when he relizes that sometimes they can get out of control he must learn when and how to use them. It has lessons of friendship and it tells that sometimes people can be corupted by others but that that coruption can be overcom. So my word of advice to you is READ IT!
A great book for the "older" kids, too! September 3, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
What a terrific book! I strolled into the public library to get *The Chronicles of Narnia* to read to my kids - it was out, so I sifted through the other fantasy titles. Being intrigued by Merlin my whole life, I picked up "The Lost Years Of Merlin" - and haven't put it down yet! I'll read it to my kids - eventually! I LOVE IT! Let me recommend this to all of you adults out there... as well as the young adults. A great read, especially if you are tired of all the "techno-fantasy" that's floating around. A terrific tale.
Hurray Merlin! August 30, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love to read books, but the Merlin books I found as something else. I'm only thirteen, but I have to say, this triolgy is (on my scale) right up there next to the Chronicals of Narnia, and The Hobbit series. Way to go, Mr. Barron, for producing a series that's imaginative and creative!
