5 out of 5 stars Aimed just right for 8-12 year olds.   September 24, 2008

I am surprised at a reviewer finding this too explicit as I looked long and hard at many books on this subject and this was the only one with enough detail to explain yet not so much to scare a child. Somebody who finds this too explicit may simply not be ready to cover this subject with their child.

1 out of 5 stars Condom advice for 8 year olds?   September 23, 2008

I bought this for my 9 year old son and it is really not suitable. There are some relevant sections, and the style of text in general is age-appropriate.
But some subjects are totally inappropriate and I recommend this for age s 11 and older.
I don`t think it is wise to tell 8 year olds about condoms!

Not at all happy with this book. I bought it for my 10 year old daughter who is very young in many ways and yet her friends have started to go through puberty so thought I would prepare her.

It's much too explicit for an innocent ten year old girl when it comes to sex and a few other things here. I would give this to my daughter at age 13/14 maybe but certainly not at age 10. I am shelving it in my attic for about 4 years.

I am no prude and think children should know many things but the way it is explained in this book is not right, my friends also think the same. I would not recommend this book =to any Innocent child who is not yet ready to learn about sex, just physical changes.

I now have to go find another more suitable book for her age.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent book for the younger boy starting puberty   June 19, 2008

In my view, this is an excellent book for the younger child (9-12) starting puberty. I read this book from cover to cover before giving it to my 9 year old son and I did not find anything in it that I would not want my son to know about. To put it in perspective, the other three books I ordered, in my view, were not suitable for a 9 year old and I have had to put them away until my son is older as they are more explicit and discuss topics in too much detail. I would feel comfortable reading this book with my child or allowing my child to read this book alone.
This book is written in very simple language with almost cartoon style illustrations and so can be easily understood by the younger child going through puberty. The book describes exactly what will happen to their body in a straightforward, easy to understand way. Not only does the book explain physical changes, differences and feelings, the book also covers; responsibilities and sections on how best to look after their body through basic diet, exercise, personal hygiene and health. One particular theme that runs through the book is that each child is unique and each child develops at different times, and changes to their body may happen in a different order to their mates - so that even if they are not developing the same as their mates or if they look different to their mates - this is perfectly normal and it is OK to be different. Knowing this can help reduce some of the insecurities, embarrassments and frustrations that going through puberty can cause.
In addition, I like the fact that the book also covers what to do in difficult situations, such as peer pressure, re: bullying, smoking, drinking, drugs, sex and the right to say `No!' to peer pressure.
The book also includes a small section to help boys to understand some of the changes that happens to girls highlighting that girls worry about the changes happening to them just as much as boys and even have a lot of the same problems.
If you are wondering, which book to get for your young male starting puberty - I don't think you will be disappointed with this one.

1 out of 5 stars I am Confused!   January 17, 2008

I am looking for a book on Puberty for my ten year old son (and for me, being a girl I know nothing about boys and puberty!). I have looked at this one to see what the review says and the reviewer says she bought it for her daughter! Presumably this is in the wrong place? I am really struggling with this as for books where the age range is described as 9-12, the reviewers seem to be saying they are aimed at teenagers. Most of the other reviews refer to teenagers as well. Could we have better age range guides, please?! I have given the book 1 star, not because it isn't any good, I haven't read it (I am trying to find out whether I should!!), but because the system tells me I have to.
