Possibly the greatest philosophical or literary work of the twenty-first century. April 6, 2008 Mr. T. H. Mansfield (Stansted/Dublin) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Where does one commence in describing a work of such intellectual magnitude? Whether in its exhaustive but accessible content, its breezy, amusing prose or its undeniable class 'Philosophy: Themes and Thinkers' is second to none. J W Phelan's enjoyable style revolutionises a sometimes stale subject and anyone who makes the excellent decision to invest in this piece of text-book gold will surely not regret it. And don't get me wrong..if you are about to sit Philosophy at A-level and have not purchased this work..you will fail. Fact. I got as close as damn it to 100% with this baby, would have got nada without it...that's no lie. Long live Phelan and long may this masterpiece stay in print.
A book to match the teacher May 23, 2007 Mr. D. S. Baker (cambridge) The author of this book is actually my philosophy teacher, and we use this book in our own time rather than in the lesson. For people that struggle with the subject like I do, its a great book. It's simple, with little of the jargon usually found in philosophy text books and flashes of humour make it bearable subject matter! The brilliance of the book reflects the legend of the man that wrote it, who is possibly the best teacher ive ever been taught by.
The philosophy student's Bible June 3, 2006 Mr jash (Cambridge, England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
J W Phelan was channelling the spirit of socrates himself when he took up his pen/keyboard and began to write this megalithic work of philosophical literature. So much more than a text-book; this tome is poetic, amusing, sometimes even moving, with strokes of pure irish brilliance. The book has saved my life during the revision periods. When i have realised i know nothing i pick up 'Themes and Thinkers' in which the lucid prose makes everything so clear, illuminating the dark recesses of the philosophy syllabus so that even the educationally short-sighted scream aloud 'I UNDERSTAND'. So raise a glass to the master, the pedagogue, yea the guru and sing aloud with me 'phelan, we salute you' Honestly, i recommend it - i lost it at one point and it was like losing a limb.
Incredibly Useful January 20, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Although i really i enjoy philopsophy at a-level i'm not a philosophical whiz. Luckily someone recommended "themes and thinkers" to me. It is really well written and covers all aspects of my course (whilst i don't do philosophy of religion etc. it's in there as well) in detail. The book is really helping me, so much so i no longer feel intimated by conversation with the wine drinking crowd at house parties. Anyway i strongly reccomend it!

highly recommended and informative book- don't even try to do philosophy without it. Especially good for A level, but useful for degree level too. legend.
