Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
This worthy winner of the Smarties prize in 1989 is a timeless classic that is enjoyed by children of all ages as well as by the adults who are continually asked to read it again and again. Follow the family's excitement as they wade through the grass, splash through the river and squelch through the mud in search of the bear. What a surprise awaits us all in the cave on the other side of the dark forest. Michael Rosen's lyrical, repetitive text reads aloud beautifully and Helen Oxenbury's delightful watercolour illustrations not only provide the perfect complement but also add another dimension to the story itself. (Ages 3 and over)

A Big Book edition of this story is also available.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic   January 19, 2008

This is such a fun story. I have even used it on a teddy bear's picnic, getting the children to act out each part eventually finding a rather large teddy bear. Children of all ages love it.

I have two small bilingual children with english being their second language. A very simple book which enables children to use their fantasy. They love this book, so much that my wife has had to translate it into swedish to keep them happy. We have been reading it for years. Everytime we head for a walk it is Bear Hunt time. We have both the large and travel version.

An ideal present for friends or relatives who are looking for a can't go wrong present.

This is my children's favourite book. My daughter (now 4) was given it for her 1st birthday and has loved it from about 18 months. My son, now 2.5, has been read it since birth and they both adore it. Because it's so fantastically repetitive and poetic both of them can recite the whole thing without needing the book so we often recite it whilst going for walks. We even play "bear hunt" round the house. I think it's a fantastic introduction to beautiful poetic language as well as being a fun story. I have heard people say their kids found it frightening but neither of my children ever have - and my daughter is frightened of most things!

1 out of 5 stars my daughter cried after this story   January 8, 2007

i bought this book because of the glowing reviews, however this is the first time my 3 yr daughter has been that upset after a story. the story is repetative and the bear doesn't appear to appreciate being disturbed nor does he look happy on returning home.
i wont be reading this book to my child again.

This is a really great book and is my 3 year old's favourite. We have read it many many times and because of the repetition in the book my daughter reads it along with me. We always look out for the bear now when we walk through the woods now to take her brother and sister to school and do the actions when we walk through grass etc. I also have the story CD of it that she can listen to when she goes to bed!
