 Excellent way to learn Spanish December 13, 2001

I'm planning to go and live in Spain in 6 months' time and have started learning the language at evening class at my local college. The book we are using on the course is BBC Suenos 1 which I find hard to follow and confusing as it covers both (Castillian) Spanish and Latin American Spanish. I have recently bought Breakthrough Spanish (book and cassettes) and it's like a breath of fresh air. The lessons are clear, straightforward to follow and the cassettes are excellent. I have been using Breakthrough Spanish as self-study as a supplement to my evening class but I reckon I could easily just have used Breakthrough Spanish to teach myself (especially as I'm not interested in the Latin American Spanish). The book also contains many helpful references to the Spanish way of life and customs. If you are going to self-study or have a supplement to more formal learning, then I can highly recommend Breakthrough Spanish. It would also be excellent for those who just wanted to learn a little Spanish to get by on holiday as the first few chapters deal with everyday things such as shopping, talking about yourself, finding your way about, etcetera.

For beginners learning the Spanish language this has got to be the best. In the almost 20 years since the Breakthrough series was introduced they have obviously, through revisions and innovations, produced a finely-honed product. As an Italian tutor who is learning Spanish from scratch, I can confirm that New Breakthrough Spanish is enjoyable as well as informative, covering the customs, culture and everyday life situations in Spanish-speaking countries.The course is accompanied by four sixty-minute cassettes, and it must be said that students studying alone would find it very difficult to make progress without these cassettes. Even those who are following a beginners' Spanish course with fellow students would be well-advised to buy the cassettes. Grammar is treated in minimalist fashion. Only the grammar required to understand the language at absolute beginners' level is covered. Nevertheless, as well as being an excellent introduction to Spanish, this is also a valuable introduction to study at GCSE level and beyond. It comes as no surprise to me that this language series has sold several million copies worldwide.

I bought this book + tape pack because I intended to go to an area of Spain where English was not widely spoken. Before I started I could not even recognise Spanish if I heard it.The book has 15 chapters covering different topics. For each, there are recorded conversations between Spanish people, the texts of the conversations, written and speaking exercises for the learner and summaries of the grammar and vocabulary covered. Each chapter also has a short section about some aspect of Spanish life. I found this a clear and stimulating introduction to the language. I worked through it over approximately 5 months in whatever time I could spare from my job and found I could communicate adequately when I went to Spain. I was very pleased with this result, and very glad I had chosen this package.
