3 out of 5 stars Misleading title   July 4, 2008

Its a good beginner's magic book. A little hokie. No real mind magic (a la Darren Brown). I think most reviews hit the mark.

2 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by it's cover (or it's name)   April 15, 2008

I bought this book hoping that there would be some kind of psychological elements to it, along the Derren Brown style of tricks. I was out of luck. The book is just another magic book where every trick requires props that you wouldn't usually carry around. If that's what you want then it's probably not a bad book to get, but if you are looking for something a little bit different, you won't find it here.

2 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype   December 28, 2006

I bought this book having read the other reviews despite the wildly varying reactions expressed. Sadly I was let down.

The cover (as stated below) is the first clue - velvet effect embossing which does not like nice at all.

The content then rapidly goes downhill - if you ignore the dreadful style (more later) there are a couple of decent enough tricks in here, though none you wouldn't find in a less pretentious book. There are nowhere near enough to justify the asking price.

As to style, not only does it tell you exactly what dialogue to use (and it is the most patronising you can imagine) but the whole book suggests that maybe magic exists, and this book can help you appear clever to your friends. To me this panders to the lowest common denominator of wannabe magicians.

This will be going straight to the charity shop!

5 out of 5 stars That's magic!   June 22, 2006

If you want to dazzle your friends down the pub with amazing magic (that they really will think is magic) then this is the book for you!

It gives you step by step instructions of how to do each trick and it reveals some of the deepest secrets of the magic circle and their tricks!

Easy to do tricks. You rarely need any more props than what you can find on your coffee table and everyone can do them!
