4 out of 5 stars Useful for a novice   September 4, 2008
C. Isbell (Southampton, UK)
Having returned to cycling after a gap of over thirty years, I found this book clear and helpful. At very least, it has guided me as to what maintenance I am willing to undertake and what will be left to the bike shop. The advice it has given me has been very useful and I am much clearer and confident in handling routine maintenance tasks.

4 out of 5 stars Too many terms not explained before being used.   June 22, 2008
T. S. Ward (London)
There are copious amounts of high quality photographs in the book, although some of them are so small one can't see the searched for detail.

Why so many authors choose to mention a technical word before explaining it much later in the text is beyond my understanding.

Also, as an engineer I was surprised not to see many more 'be careful when doing this' type comments. Advising people to place parts of the body near spinning objects is not a sensible thing to do: burns to the skin and broken fingers can ensue. Only 4 stars, therefore.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I have seen for bike repair or maintenance   April 14, 2008

This book ideal for beginners to bicycle repair and maintenance. There are lots of photographs in the book which make things easier to understand. I find it to be a useful reference book when I need to review different aspects of bicycle maintenance or repair.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good. Worth adding to the book shelf   March 17, 2004

The pictures are large in colour and accurate (nice close-ups). There are decent technical cutaways diagrams when required. The details cover the aspects of common modern bikes. This includes things like elastomer forks as well as newer oil forks and air (although it is a bit vague on air forks). I found the sections on derailleur adjustments and wheel bearing replacements to be very good, as these are the things I do on a regular basis. I also have "zinn and the art of mountain bike maintenance" which seems to get a lot of 5* reviews, but in my honest opinion, this book is better as it covers a smaller more popular range of components (maybe more UK specific?) The text is also more precise and the diagrams clearer. If you are concerned I would check them out first in a bookshop as they are two totally different books, but if you do decide buy this I don't think you'll be disappointed. It’s quite a good price too!

3 out of 5 stars A Useful Book   November 11, 2003

This is a useful book that tries to make bicycle maintenance easy. Nicely coloured diagrams and very useful checklists, together with an indication of the difficulty of the task helps the reader. I found that not all the terms were explained when they were first used. This meant reading on, aware that you didn't know what exactly was being discussed, until the term became clear later. This was a really strange feeling, and reduced the effectiveness of the book for me. That aside, there is still some value in the suggested routines and the tables indicating the tools and skill required in order to carry out a certain task.
