Lovely way to spend a wet Sunday September 1, 2008 Mimzi (Hertfordshire) I was scouting around the house looking for something to fill in an atrociously wet Sunday, and remembered someone had lent me a pile of books amongst which was this one. I had not previously read any of Cathy Kelly's books, or even heard of her, but I am very glad I have made her aquaintance. Once started I couldn't put it down, I read until I got to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it, although the story did jump about a bit in time it was much easier to keep track of than several other books I have recently read. I liked the characters (well almost all, surely no one could like Sybil) and could so easily picture them from their description and it brought the book to life for me. It also gave an insight into the horrors the medical profession had to cope with during that war and their valient efforts to help those almost beyond help and I found it very moving in places. It was good to know the matron did have a heart. Even the stranded whale was very topicalLessons in Heartbreak I will certainly be on the look out for more books by this writer, I found it entertaining, amusing and thought provoking, what more can you ask for light reading?
Cathy Kelly does it again August 5, 2008 E. E. Brennan (Crossgar) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is essential reading for any female that has ever experienced the sadness of a break up. The book teaches us that not everything you take for granted is as it seems and there are unexpected twists and turns in the story. Strength, compassion and the ties of family and friends are highlighted in the book which although not intellectually challenging does give us all some food for thought. I read this book in 1 day as I lifted it and literally could not put it down. Every woman should read this book at least once in their life.
Sadly forgetable July 4, 2008 B4 member (UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I am a huge fan of Cathy Kelly, but was left feeling disappointed having just finished Lessons in Heartbreak. For me it just felt as if the book lacked a bit of substance - the characters were nice enough and the angst they experienced realistic enough, but somehow this wasn't enough. A fair amount of the book is set looking back to Lily's life during the second world war and although integral to the whole story it doesn't feel seemless as the book goes from past to present Overall this book was a disappointment from an author who can normally be relied on to produce a page turner. However saying all that the book did make me cry at the end - so it gets an extra star for that!
