Amazon.co.uk Review Following the success of Dead Clever, this is Scarlett Thomas's second "Lily Pascale" story: a fast-paced murder mystery in the tradition of the amateur female sleuth (Lily is a lecturer in crime fiction at a University somewhere in Devon). Keenly aware of its own fictional conventions-- Lily is a reader, a woman who knows her debt to Edgar Allan Poe and Miss Marple--In Your Face plays suspense against cliché: the worlds of academia, journalism and profiling collide when, after receiving a troubled 'phone call from an old University friend (Jess), Lily becomes embroiled in solving the murder of three young women. An unsuccessful hack, Jess has just published an article on the women--all victims of stalking--for a gossip magazine. On the morning of publication, all three are murdered, Jess disappears and Lily goes to London, a somewhat casual but compulsive detective. Presenting itself as a puzzle--from the Prologue, in which two boys and girl are discovered having sex in a posh boarding-school, to the killer's narrative spliced with Lily's account of her various London adventures--In Your Face is dead clever: a pleasant piece of escapism, unashamed of its conventions or of the odd surprise. --Vicky Lebeau

What an Extraordinary Novel September 14, 1999 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
So this is the second outing for Lily? How ever did I miss the first? Scarlett Thomas is a quite extraordinary writer. You'd think that someone who can plot this tightly might have some difficulty coming up with the actual words. After all, what kind of a person can be equally gifted in both departments? The answer's here: this author is a revelation. If I hadn't read the book largely in bed I think I would have been on the edge of my seat from cover to cover - and that's saying something. The kind of book that seems to get published these days normally has me nodding off after twenty pages. It's more than that, though. In Lily, the author has managed to create a glamorous character rich in the kind of humanity and intelligence that are difficult to find now, with the current vogue for rather depressing urban creatures that might curl up and suffer convulsions west of Chelsea. The author's also clever in other ways, but doesn't go out of her way to flaunt it. References as diverse as Peeping Tom and Manga suggest there are even better things to come. You really will be gagging for more. Scarlett Thomas is a class act.
Second Appearance for Lily Pascale even better than first April 9, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Lily Pascale's first appearance in Dead Clever proved her to be a shrewd, sexy heroine and in this sequel, she gets involved in an even more complicated mystery. Scarlett Thomas is definitely the most exciting crime writer around, but these books are so good that even if you don't like genre fiction you should give them a go. I think this book would make a great TV series, and Scarlett knows exactly how to tease and exhilerate the reader, dropping clues but never quite giving away the full story. This is one to savour; trust me, after you've finished this, you'll be gagging for the third installment.
