1 out of 5 stars Clean Cut - oh dear ....   September 27, 2008
Anne Jarvis (NSW Australia)
I've read many Lynda La Plante books and there hasn't been one that I haven't thought was a good read - until now. Oh dear, I found Clean Cut to be long-winded and quite boring. I really struggled to finish reading it. Not written in her usual style at all!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed   September 4, 2008

Having read a number of La Plante's books and enjoyed the strong feminine roles she creates, I found that this book had a weak plot with a racist streak - most of the black characters were evil or stupid. Marina Lewycka's 'Two Caravans' can be contrasted with this, she deals with the difficult issues of immigration and factory farming with a sense of humour and wit.
Illegal immigrants are often desperate but that does not mean that La Plante should not give them rounded characters which she tried to do for the other characters - however this book gave me a view of Lynda's character which was shocking.

2 out of 5 stars could have done better   July 28, 2008
White Rose (Isle of Wight, UK)
the problem is... I came to this having just read the startlingly brilliant Talisman, the sequel to The Legacy, in which Lynda La Plante had a sweeping attention holding saga with - please note, Lynda - first class writing. This is a long way below that. An abundance of exclamation marks, capping sentences that the story could have done without, a mass of dangling participles, that 'doing two things simultaneously when it isn't possible to do them simultaneously' syndrome and the characterisation and storyline are weak. I usually like Ms La Plante's thrillers but this is way below par, as if she was rushed to write another book for contractual reasons. Very disappointing indeed. I did expect more.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best   July 19, 2008
Catht711 (Liverpool UK)
I have to say I was a little disappointed after reading Clean Cut as it wasn't up to her usual standards. Her last book, The Red Dahlia was an absolute delight to read which I couldn't put down but this book didn't give me the same feeling. The fantastic characters are still there but the storyline lacked well a decent storyline. I seemed to know what was going to happen before it did so it was a bit predictable. It won't stop me buying more of her books though because I know she can produce better!

2 out of 5 stars Clean Cut it is Not   July 2, 2008
Man with a View! (London)
This is my first Lynda La Plant, and from what I read, it may well be my last. It was slow to start and the plot was very very complex and often confusing. the author even had the characters explaining the plot so far every 100 pages or so. However, a good plot with some twist, but to get the best out of it your need to read it in one siting as the twists and turns get confusing if you come back to it at any later stage. I would not say that it was Lynda La plante's finist moment.
