boring and confusing September 2, 2008 Mrs. L. A. Hill (england) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this book very tedious to read and could not wait to get to the end. I am still none the wiser about the ending, and found it very confusing, leaving me with a feeling of unfullfilment and closure that we all look for in our books. Im sure plenty of people will disagree with me, and always believe everyone should make there own decision. It was not my type of book at all, but love to try out a change of author from time to time, but needless to say i will not be reading another of this authors books, sorry.
Haunting! June 16, 2008 LindyLouMac (Italy) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been reading and enjoying Rosie Thomas's novels for the last fifteen years. This one is no exception, thinking I had missed this one for some reason I started it the other day. The haunting storyline soon came flooding back to me. The earthquake, the residents of Dunollie mansions, the island of Halemni and the Giorgiadis family. The arrival of Kitty (Catherine, `Cary' Stafford) on the island in the aftermath of the tsunami upsets the balance of life within the Giorgiadas family. Olivia Giorgiadas comes to feel threatened by Kitty this stranger who seems to want what she has. It disconcerts her as she is same age as Kitty and they are strikingly similar in looks. Kitty is envious of Olivia and things become even more complicated when Olivia's brother Max arrives on the island. There is an immediate physical attraction between Kitty and Max which adds to the tension already building. Eventually things come to a dramatic climax and Kitty realises she must leave Halemni, but not without having learnt what might have been! The Potter's House is an absorbing story about love and fate. Fate makes us the person we are but it can also prevent us from becoming the person we could have been. It will leave you thinking about it for a long time afterwards.
Things are not what they seem December 4, 2007 Avid Reader (Nittedal, Norway) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Rosie Thomas writes great books, but this one is special. You read it and enjoy it - and then you realize that things are not what they seem. This is a great love story with a twist - to be enjoyed and remembered for a long time.
Fake Your Death & Start Again ! November 4, 2006 A. Rose 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
A good read with an excellent storyline, although at the end I wasn't sure whether the main character was a figment of her friend's imagination or had really lived! I thought the precarious position of the main character at start of the book was superbly written. It is quite frightening to read `The first time I saw the woman who later ran off with my husband . . .' it was un-put-downable for me at that point on page one of chapter one. The concept of faking your own death and starting again has always intrigued me in that the slate can be wiped clean and a new life begin. This story shows how easily it could be done in the aftermath of a massive natural disaster, so long as you give little away about your past. Very enjoyable and thought provoking.
Fantastically disturbing August 9, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
The Potters House is one of my all time favourite books and I insist that all my friends read it too.Fabulous and subtle writing about the interaction between the two main female characters: Olivia is happy and settled with her family when Kitty arrives from the aftermath of an earthquake. Kitty isn't outwardly trying to upset the balance of the family but with or without intending to, she does. At the story continues the two women almost metamophorosise into one another in appearance and behaviour and it begs the question, is there one too many woman in that family community? When Kitty meets and falls for Olivia's brother who is married but comes on a holiday, Olivia's world looks shakey. In the background there is vague reference to Kitty's brother dying when he was younger but you don't understand what really happened until the very end - where the twist in the tail is phenomenal and I really didn't see it coming. When I lent it to my sister she stayed up all night to finish it!! Loved it!
