Life-affirming June 21, 2006 John Mccartney 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Mary Wesley's first novel is different from her subsequent books; there is a smaller cast of characters and the central pivot of the story is a genuinely chilling life-or-death decision taken in the depths of loss of the loved one. It is a situation which perhaps you need to be older and to have some experience of loss to understand and appreciate. Given that, this is a most life-affirming and elevating read. It stands equally with her other books.
depressing August 24, 2005 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've read a few Mary Wesley books and enjoyed them very much, so I was really looking forward to read Jumping the queue. I can only say I expected something very different, as I found the story very depressing and most of the situations quite surreal!
An unconventional heroine and a great read September 20, 2001 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This was the first Mary Wesley I read and I have since read others. The heroine, Matilda, has made a huge decision about her life but is thwarted from carrying this out by a chain of events. Matilda an elderly widow full of spark, flouts convention in a way that I can only envy. Her firm, unfussy character is well rounded and strangely likeable. The story is told with humour as Matilda meets and helps a man who is to have a dramatic effect on her circumstances. Along with her pet goose (yes really) her anarchic humour and reminiscences about her husband make her a very real character involved in an intriguing and poignant story. This is a story about memories, ageing, convention and fleetingly, the shallowness of youth (especially like it when Matilda deliberately pees on the favourite picnic spot of a group of exuberant youths on a beach). Very readable, very well written, and a good introduction to Mary Wesley
Excellent book, that manages to touch on all human emotions October 9, 1999 This is a book that all women will empathise with. It manages to reach all aspects of human emotion, and even in the depths of despair brings a touch of humour and levity to the situation.
