A great start, gory and interesting story about a young vampire.. August 30, 2008 Stampy (England) In the first book of the series, Cirque Du Freak, Darren Shan is just an ordinary school boy when he sees a freak show and his life changes forever. Second book Vampire's assistant tells the story of Shan as a half vampire, and Mr Crepsley' s assistant, and how Shan is living at the freak show which ruined his life. Mr Crepsley, Evra and Darren are in the city among girls and creatures of the night in the third book, Tunnels of Blood. Author Darren Shan has tested the theory of creatures of the night to the extreme in his first 3 novels, with a dramatic approach to the world of darkness. The first book is all about the introduction, the idea that something else is out there, which is promoted brilliantly through the mysterious freak show. And Shan's interpretation of the freaks is very intriguing, if somewhat disruptive through constant interruption of personal thoughts in action moments. The whole ideology of the freak show and the intense dramatic ending make a great start to the saga. The vampire's assistant follows straight after the dramatic events of the first, with Darren having a hard time adjusting to life as a vampire. More descriptive than the first, the sequel is more personal, focusing around the mood of Darren, being away from his home and adjusting to a completely new life style at the freak show. In comparison to the first, the concept of the freak show will keep you hooked, if Darren can be an annoying stereotypical teen at frequent points. Again another fantastic dramatic ending will have you jumping straight to book 3. Tunnels of Blood differs from the predecessors, by having more gory moments, and a deeper look into the vampire world, and a change was definitely required. And a sweet funny segment of the book goes to Debbie, Darren's love interest. The ending to this novel will have you grabbing the next straight away. The third book is the best out of the three, with fast and gory moments. Shan's writing improved with every novel and creates chilling and dramatic scenarios on a frequent basis to make a memorable start to the saga 8/10
Darren Shan: Vampire Blood Trilogy August 29, 2008 Jon Cook in my opinion this first trilogy of the 4 trilogies though ive only read the first 3 this if the best one for many reasons. Firstly i found this one the most captivating because it gives a different look to the theory of vampires and makes you want to read more to learn more about them also i think another thing that makes this first trilogy great is what darren has to go through which is really though i won't give it away and how he has to learn the ways of the vampires. Including drinking BLOOD! but seriously for anyone looking for a great adventurous book with a bit of hooror you have to buy this!
A good book for kids. June 22, 2008 Miss Karenina 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After hearing so many people rave about the Darran Shan series I felt I had to read them. I was a bit disappointed to be honest. To start with, I know it's a series intended for kids, but I found the lazy, childish writing style cringe-inducing, and just plain frustrating. (Plus there are far more exclamation marks than anyone of sound mind should use.) However, I persevered to the end, and overall I thought the books were full of good ideas and plots. In a nutshell: a brilliant story, poorly written.
A great start to a great series! October 10, 2007 P. Watson (Edinburgh) These are probably my favourite three books in the series. While it might not be as action-packed as following books, they're still as emotional. Once you've read this, you'll definatly want to read the sequels. I did, anyway! The author isn't as ruthless at the start of the saga as he is nearer the end. Even if you find the book a bit boring, stick with it, because the next ones are way more exciting.
Oh to be a Vampire June 24, 2007 steven583699 (Norfolk, UK) The Darren Shan Saga, books 1-12, are the best adventure books ever written, in my humble opinion. It is a universally acknowledged fact of life that Vampires are seriously Cool, with a capital C and cherries on top. Thus the story of an average teenager becoming a creature of the night is compelling. Other fantastically mysterious characters make this book a rip-roaring, but sometimes quite clever, tale. I wouldn't describe it as a horror book, more an epic of the fantasy genre, and I can only recommend it to those who like escaping to more interesting places in a book.
