Books of beastly proportions. September 8, 2008 mad_mushroom 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
These pop-up books are fab. Can be read to children of any age (though try not to frighten your toddler) but owing to the fragile nature of the pop-ups, reading should be supervised until children are, five and up, maybe? Each book has 12 pages - six double-page spreads. Every page has between two and four pop-ups (one big and the rest smaller). Beasts, sea-creatures and dinosaurs all have phonetic pronounciation (for those of us likely to get our Allosaurs confused with our Baryonx, for instance). There are several spectacular stand-out pop-ups in each book; the wooly mammoth in Beasts, T-Rex in Dinosaurs (and I'm pleased to see Allosaurus gets a mention too, as does Deinocheirus), and Megalodon and the plesiosaurs in Sharks. There's also a little bit of background such as brief mentions of the Bone wars and some of the more famous fossil hunters. In short suited to three years and up for the pop-ups, but they won't get the best from it until they're five and want to read all the stories attached to the little pull-outs. The only reason I give this four stars instead of five is that sometimes the models have not been put together properly: but out of five different books by Sabuda and Reinhart I've only had one that disappointed (and I sent that one back).
