Quite good, different from usual January 2, 2008 marky77 (England) This book is very different from the previous entries in the Saga of Darren Shan as it takes place in another world wheer Darren and Harkat have gone to discover who Harkat is. The fact the Darren is a vampire is not mentioned much in the book and it concentrates mainly on the world they have travelled to and discovering who Harkat was. Quite a good entry in the series, and of course a nice surprise at the end when we find out who Harkat was.

This book was very different from the other Darren Shan books I have read, but I think that it had something to do with the fact that this book was set in another relm. In this book I found alot more about Mr Tiny that I never knew before and it surprised me just how powerful he acturly is. The great thing about this book was the place that it was set and the discription of the relm that darren was put in. Most aurthors when writting about different relmes tend to go OTT with there discriptions and make it seem really unrelistic. But Darren Shan got it just right and made the relm both scary and relistic at the same time. Finally the twist at the end really was surprising, completely unexpected and finished the book perfectly.
The Series Takes a Creative Turn January 26, 2005 Jarrod T Thompson (Junction City, KS) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The expertly written Saga of Darren Shan continues to make the reader want more in The Lake of Souls. Once again there are big surprises and explanations of the mysterious little people, specifically Harkat Mulds, in a little more detail here.Darren embarks on a journey that is seemingly not related to his quest to defeat the Vampaneze Lord...ahh, but all parts of Shan's books are related in some way. With a major character dead, the series had to turn toward explaining some of the elements of plot that had been introduced, but not completely explained. At this point in the series, it has to be hard to decide where to take the plot, but Shan is genius in his decisions. The author keeps the reader wnating more, more, more. In my reviews of the books in this series I try to say as little about plot as possible because I don't want to ruin anything for Shan fans. For those who claim the author is without skill, I say Charna's guts! You just don't get it. This series continues to be all readers can think about until. . . the next installment--Lord of the Shadows I read all 12 books in this series and actually ordered the last 4 from England because I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. Shan's unique perspective on vampires makes this series fun for those who like vampire stories and those who do not. Shan is truly talented.

this book is great. needs more than just five stars!!!i found this book in a bargin bucket in a shop in town, the cover design and the title drew me to buy it and it is well worth it!! i had never heard of any of darren shan's work before and i didnt know what it was on aboout at first but it tells you most of it, if youve never read any of his books dont worry, it doesnt matter. darren acompanies a friend into a strange world to help find out who he once was, the face scorching desserts, horrible creatures and drastic enviormental changes. the monsters includes panthers, giant toads, dragons, and some deformed snake. i would reccomend this book to anyone!!!
