Fantastic Lightroom tutorial June 7, 2008 I. MCCAIN (Bolton, UK) I have been using Lightroom for several months now, but felt I was missing out on its full potential. I needed someone who knows what they are talking about to take me through it step-by-step and show me all the features and how to use them to improve workflow efficiency and end product quality. Scott Kelby has done that for me with this book. I happen to like his jokey style, so reading the book and using it with Lightroom was like having a pal who was talking me through it. The book is broken down into relevant sections covering the Lightroom modules, and it is easy to go back and find a particular feature to go over it again if you want to. It is packed with high quality photos illustrating the techniques and with screenshots of the software. Certainly I was missing many of the useful features of Lightroom, but now I feel much more confident and productive. The workflow sections for wedding and landscape shots in the last two chapters bring it all together and show how to use it in real life situations. I also have Scott's CS3 book, and this too is excellent. All in all, I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn the full potential of Lightroom.
Waste of Money March 23, 2008 letsgetitright (England Europe) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am a great fan of Scott Kelly's books and I have had many of them over the years, but this book is quite honestly now a waste of money. I purchased it at the same time as Lightroom itself during February 2008 and hoped that it would help me to understand Lightroom. But this book covers Lightroom 1.0 and though the publisher has provided updates for Lightroom 1.1 we are now on Lightroom 1.3 and soon to be Lightroom 1.4.1. Since Lightroom 1.0 there have been vast changes to this software making this book very different to what we have today. I'm not blaming Scott Kelly for this at all, it is just that things have moved along so swiftly since Lightroom's initial release in 2007. So if you are getting involved with Lightroom don't waste your money on this book because you will be very disappointed.
Covers the subject well, but rather too much of Scott Kelby. Printed on cheap paper March 7, 2008 Marc Gander 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As a straightforward instruction book, it goes through all of the steps in logical order - 1, 2, 3, ... etc. However, comparatively little explanation of of "Why?" so that the book is presented in a rather over-mechanical way, to my mind. That said, it is very useful but what makes it difficult to take is Scott Kelby's bluff, hale and hearty manner. Frankly he gets in the way of this book. I have a sense that Scott feels that you the reader wants to get to know him. I certainly don't. I paid money to get to know Lightroom. If it was at a party, I would pretend to notice someone I knew elsewhere and politely walk away. The only solution here is to look for a different book. I was also very surprised and disappointed to find that the book is publish on very poor quality paper - very much the same stuff that is used for weekly women's magazines. This is fine for a magazine but not for a book which one would expect to use regularly as a reference guide. I really don't expect that this book is capable of taking the wear and tear. In conclusion, I would suggest finding a book by a different author and from a publisher who is interested in a better quality product.
The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers September 19, 2007 E. Palmer (UK) 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
The content of the book is very thorough infact too much so. Scott Kelby takes you through his way of doing things in great detail. Unfortunately the book is very poorly structured for example there is a section titled "best ways to veiw your photos" there are then 27 steps to follow over 15 pages in order to complete this none of which have a title so very difficult to refer back to the section you want, beacuse of this it is probably the most unhelpful book I have ever bought. If you want to use Lightroom by numbers you will love this book. If you want to find out how to use lightroom through understanding the programme and how it can be used by you then I would not recomend this book.
Good Value September 5, 2007 Ken Sinclair 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is an exceptionally helpfull book for the new user, but is also a very god day-to-day reference manual. Worth every penny!!!
