Dated but useful May 4, 2005 B. Chandler (Arlington, Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well it is time for a third edition (with an updated OS description). I bought this book for a "Mastering the Palm" class at the University of Texas at Arlington. The class was great. We used the book as more of a placeholder to be sure everything was covered. Some people had older Palms and the book matched. I was helped greatly as I was coming from ground zero and the only book that read previously was a "how to install". The CD ROM and web site information took us beyond the scope of the book. One real advantage of the book is it encourages you to learn what you have. Then when you need that function you are already aware of its presence.
Excellent book, a must for anyone with a Palm OS device May 29, 2001 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book simply has it all. It is a perfect complement to the literature that Palm includes with their devices, and the CD included is just full of more or less useful programs to try out.The book contains both the basics, small useful hints (and the wonderful Graffiti alternative signs on the inner covers), and in depth information on all kinds of topics. I use it as a reference for whatever I need to do with my Palm. There is even information on how to use the Palm with linux. :-) Palm (and Handspring et al) should consider including this book with all their devices. It might generate a lot more happy customers.
Essential Reading for all "Piloteers" April 16, 1999 If you own a PalmPilot, this book should be on your bookshelf too.It is readable, interesting, honest and goes far above and beyond the supplied manuals. Particularly relevant for those real life situations the 3Com manuals don't cover - the workarounds, timesavers and the data-saving escape routes when things don't go quite as planned! Also the comprehensive coverage of third party software, shareware and freeware will help the novice user take their first tentative steps into the wide world outside the standard 3Com applications. The fact that the Palm Manufacturer's website InSync "Hints and Tips" service often credits David Pogue's book as their source should be recommendation enough.
Really cool stuff - A must have March 15, 1999 If you are, like me, de facto allergic to documentation and you want to get the most out of your Palm Pilot, go for this book. I read it from page 1 and really appreciated the tricks and alternative ways of finding or accessing data.
Stupendous book & CD-ROM!!! March 6, 1999 The book itself is extraordinary enough with its patient yet extremely thorough detailing of all things Palm Pilot (up to the Palm III). BUT THE CD-ROM, W/900 PROGRAMS ON IT BLEW ME AWAY. I was unprepared for its stunningly simple yet complete interface & functioning. Pogue has done all he needs to do this lifetime to earn his ticket into Heaven, as far as I'm concerned. Do no pass up this book.
