5 out of 5 stars An essential travel companion!   December 11, 2007

The Rough Guide to Brittany and Normandy beats all the others hands
down. We always go for Rough Guides, finding them to be the best
written travel books on the market, with a good balance of practical
details and background information, and this one is one of the best we
have used. Am loving the new colour sections, too.

5 out of 5 stars Really useful book!   October 24, 2007

In my opinion this is one of the best guide books on the market about France. Witty and with tongue in cheek, but with lots of informed historical detail - and Greg Ward obviously loves his food, as the restaurant reviews made my mouth water - we found it to be a really good companion.

5 out of 5 stars Stormin' Normandy   October 24, 2007

Our family went to Normandy this summer and brought two guide books. This one ended up being used all the time as it seemed to give us the best flavour of the region in an incisive, objective yet personable way. I've read the reviews before this one and can't understand what the references to negativity are based on - we thought there was a dry and appreciating wit throughout the book. This book comes highly recommended from our family.

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful. Simply dreadful.   August 29, 2007

I am sure this has been made clear by other reviewers, but the negative tone of this book cannot be overstated. I have been to this area many, many times in my life, and having been bought this book as a present, I found myself wondering whether the author and I had actually been to the same places. The people in Brittany and Normandy are almost without fail a delight, and more than happy to help with anything relating to their lands. Many times I have wandered into bars and restaurants in Normandy and (especially) Brittany, almost entirely upon the recommendations of locals, and had a fantastic time chatting and eating.

I feel I have to tell you all the above, simply to counteract what has been written in this book. The miserable tones which you have to battle through on every page make reading this book a real chore, and can fill the prospective holidaymaker with dread. Worse, you might even just stay at home, and do a few odd jobs instead. Ignore him! Please! Go to this beautiful place, drink the wines, and eat the cheeses - especially the king of cheeses, the Livarot, a local specialty.

This is a tenner poorly spent, and such a disgrace to the otherwise good name of the Rough Guide series. Get something else instead, such as the excellent Rough Guide To France, or even better, just get a cheap flight and discover the place for yourself.

Awful book! Put my husband and myself off our trip, luckily other guides helped. Very negative, I am not at all convinced that this guy wanted to do this! Rough Guides are usually good, so I hope this is just a blip.
