Get self-confidence December 29, 2006 Jerome Vitenberg (Free World) Mainly targeting US readers, it is more raising the moral of the job-seekers than providing practical tips; it is remarkable in the sense that it can help you mapping your "true" business soul: what do you really want to do for a living? Which industry and which occupation are the ones you truly wish to be involved with? From there, it will provide you with some tips to implement your career "road-map" after you designed its mapping. I found it useful to be advised as a reference to the teaching staff for the PDP (Personal development Planning) modules of the UCLan academic programme at DEI Bachelor & Master Degrees, Thessaloniki.
You are not just a CV you are a wonderful set of skills. January 7, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Perfect for the job hunter of today where we are no longer a job title but have to be adaptable to changing world of jobs as well as job names. THis book will get you to see yourself differently...as a set of skills that can do any job demanding those skills....giving you the confidence to go to the interview with the full belief you will be a good candidate. Once you learn the lessons in this book they will be invaluable throughout your life!
Crunch Time November 11, 2005 Smith 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This book, as it states in the preface, is written in incredibly simple language. The basic idea of the book is to help people navigate through the difficult process of deciding how to make changes in their life, be they small (traditional job hunt) or potentially overwhelming (life changing job hunt). Mr Bolles' idiosyncratic style is endearing, and it is very easy to relate to. His basic message is this: the better an idea you get in your head of where what and who you love, and how you love going about things, and therefore what you want... the greater, proportionately, is your chance of getting it. The book is packed with interesting exercises to get you thinking about these things and a step by step easy to follow (and back up plan endowed, thank you very much) set of instructions for how to go about getting what you want. (Hard work is a prerequisite, unfortunately, but Bolles provides interesting statistics on where that hard work is best targetted, and how to keep yourself motivated in a life changing situation which so often has many of us chucking away our dreams and plumping for the easy option. DON'T DO IT!
Great career searching book November 10, 2005 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
If you buy one book to help you with finding a new career, or deciding what job to do, or if you don't know what to do with your life, then this one should be it. It is very "readable" and takes you step-by-step through the career finding process and makes you think about things about yourself that you might never have thought of before. Then after it has helped you decide what you want to do, it takes you through job hunting, interviews, negotiating salaries... It is very comprehensive. It is written by an American, so has a leaning towards American terms and organisation, but don't let this put you off, because it doesn't really make too much difference and I haven't found an equivalent book aimed soley at the UK market.
