Powerful and challenging September 21, 2008 A. Chuter (England) I've never reviewed a product on Amazon before, but this book was so powerful I really felt I had to recommend it to others. The Shack doesn't present you with the traditional view of God and Christianity - in fact, Christianity in many senses barely makes an appearance. But God does, and in a guise that is new and inspiring. Mack, the main character, is a guy it's all too easy to relate to. His issues and feelings are experienced by every one of us at some point in our lives. This isn't an easy read. I found myself challenged on many issues, from the nature of forgiveness to what rights we really have as humans. But it's also a read I would recommend for anyone who is facing difficult times, who is asking questions about Christianity and/or God or who simply wants a fascinating, inspiring read.
Misrepresenting God September 18, 2008 Olivia Blair (Aberfeldy) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
Nearly every theological heresy starts with a misconception of the nature of God and this book is no exception.
Thought Provoking September 5, 2008 J. L. Gerretsen (Stockton-on-Tees, United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A great book, whatever it's "theological" or literary downfalls may be. Like most of the readers of this book, I am one of the "unwashed masses" who unfortunately do not have theological degrees and years of intensive bible study behind me so cannot offer comment on it's theological credo's or implications. What it did give me though was a very real sense of God's love and the "realness" of God, despite the attempts of the church to make God in their own image. I think for anyone who is discontent with the churches and religions and christian "movements" that we encounter nowadays, this novel helps to simplify a key concept: God loves YOU and wants to spend eternity with YOU and will do anything to accomplish this, even sacrificing his own son in the process and the things and religious institutions that men try and make such a big deal about on earth can sometimes be obstacles. Having experienced the fallen nature of christian leadership in a missions setting in the 3rd world for 3 years left me with some bitterness about the way the "church" operates. The Shack has definitely helped me to see past the problems and pains of the temporal and to the eternal that is coming. One reviewer rather shockingly and crassly suggested that the author was deliberately cashing in on the Madeleine Mcann events. Given that the writing and publishing dates were sometime before this event would tend to refute this theory.... don't be put off.
Wow! Read this book... August 25, 2008 Ms. C. Robertson (Crawley, UK) I very nearly allowed myself to be put off reading The Shack because of the claims by some that it's not scripturally sound - I'm so glad I took the plunge as the claim is unfounded. I've just finished reading it and will be reading it again and again. I have been challenged, moved and convicted by this wonderful story. I also laughed out loud at the 'God listens to funk' line (see page 90) As someone who loves funk music that's really encouraging : - ) What can I say - get it read it and be prepared to be blown away : - )
Brilliant read August 13, 2008 R. Browne THe most though provoking book I have read in a long time. Whether you have a faith or not this book leaves you thinking days after you finish it. It's an original slant on the age old questions of whether God exists - and in what form and how to balance the good vs evil quandry. My best piece of advice is don't read it on the train if you are a weepy.
