Be very careful! April 21, 2007 Rosemary (Norwich, Norfolk United Kingdom) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book claims to cure many illnesses, even chronic ones - which is why I bought the book. It is not until page 200 that Dr Fuhrman says 'I do not recommend fasting for patients with laboratory findings of significant liver or kidney disease'. For many people, these conditions are undiagnosed because there are usually no symptoms until the final stages of the diseases. I think that his quote should be very prominent in the blurb and not just a one liner near the end of the book. This is potentially very dangerous!
Contrary to popular belief - fasting is heatlthy! August 23, 2004 7 out of 12 found this review helpful
I'd never heard of fasting for health, I'd always thought fasting is the idiot's way to short-lived weight loss , then I read this book and I was blown away.Unfortunately its very American, very repetitive, not a well laid out or presented book. It leaves you with more questions than answers. However the information is not very technical nor highbrow, so is digestible to the layman. But it's not self-help book and is missing guidelines on how to go about fasting and how to get the miracle to work for you. Having said that, fasting is nothing new, it's been around for thousands of years and is very spiritual. Fortunately this book doesn't go into the spiritual side of fasting but is definitely food for thought and inspiring if you have an ailment or several and you are fed-up with modern/ western medicine or if you are just curious...
An informative look at the our diet and its effect on health March 3, 2004 L. Williams (United Kingdom) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Its a great book, I've read it cover to cover to make sure I get all the facts right. It really makes you take a look at the food you used to eat and think was good for you. I bought the book to find a healthier way of eating because I'd always get stomach cramps and this book offered a natural way to combat this. It all basically makes sense that we should eat plant based foods but this book really hits home the problems that no one seems to realise is associated with eating processed foods and meats. The only reason I knocked a star off, is because its really American. I mean I know the guy that wrote it is American so he refers to the American diet all the time but its also a tad repetitive, and uses obvious examples as if he thinks by giving someone a name its evidence his diet works. It's really hard to convert quickly to a plant based diet as you have to almost re-educate yourself. I've been trying for a couple of weeks now so I can't tell you the long term benfits but I feel much better snaking on fruit than I do chocolate which now makes me feel a bit sick. So if you want an informative book that gives you hard evidence as opposed to the quick fix miracle cure I would definitely recommend this book.
A radical view June 11, 2003 michael f eichner (Ashurst Wood, West Sussex United Kingdom) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I was inspired by this book to go on a three week water fast, and found it to be easy and very beneficial for a number of health problems I had (which I wont bore you with). I would recommend this book totally, but watch out for negative reactions from friends and relations if you decide to fast, as the subject seems to raise issues of fear in some people, including some doctors
A must read... June 29, 1999 11 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is an excellent book, and the only real problem that I have found with it, is to get people to read it! AAGH. Such and excellent book, and too many stuborn people. Dr. Furhman is one of the few M.D.s that actually care about us... Ever wonder why your doctor doesnt want you to read this book? He continues to make money, as long as you are sick...
