A good read February 9, 2008 D. Hart 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book on the spur of the moment with some other books from Amazon. I chose it really because it was cheap to buy - so not much of a risk - and because I had read some other books about the Viet Nam helicopter conflict, such as `Chickenhawk' that were interesting & good to read, and I hoped this would be too. I wasn't disappointed. Al SEVER's style is certainly easy to read and I soon found it difficult to put down. He served for an extensive period on combat helicopters, mostly gunships and recounts his time in Viet Nam with a factual and unassuming style with certain parts indicating he is probably a thoughtful man as well as a good soldier. Obviously keen to get involved in combat and stay there, he also refers to the loss of hearts and minds of the locals the great American war-machine tended to steam roller over, with the ultimate result that despite overwhelming technology and firepower they lost out to a simpler yet more determined foe. Perhaps someone should have read his book before the invasion of Iraq without an apparent follow-up plan for what to do after Saddam was kicked out. If you like easy to read autobiographical accounts of being an operational soldier in a conflict, I think you will like this book. I did.
