A good place to start January 7, 2003 N. Clarke (Lancs, UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Reilly, a reliable and respected historian of medieval Spain, provides here a clear (if occasionally rather dry) overview of medieval Iberia from Visigothic times through to the fall of Granada. As the title suggests, Reilly deals with both sides of the religious and territorial divide in medieval Spain. While his own specialisation in Christian Spain does show through, his comments on Al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) serve as a useful and straightforward introduction to a topic that will be new to many. Significantly, the book focus does not focus solely on military and political details, although these things are paid due attention; Reilly also takes in culture, society and technology to paint a fuller picture of Muslim, Christian and Jewish life in Iberia, and how these three communities interacted. Informative introductory reading on a fascinating period of history.
