4 out of 5 stars This, DKR, or Mariokart 64?   April 6, 2006

I got this a long time after the N64 stopped, but it still managed to be very entertaining.
I got it because it was made by Rare, and after enjoying Diddy Kong Racing more than MarioKart 64 I wanted to see if this was going to live up to either of them.
First of all, instant impressions.
The graphics are Really good. They have a similar look to Jet Force Gemini (a very good thing!), very detailed and smooth and with a very varied style.
The music is also surprisingly good!.. but the voices are typical Disney style high pitched repetetive phrases.
I was initially disappointed with the game because I got gold trophies on each easy and medium difficulty level first try.
I think it's safe to say you will find it gets sufficiantly difficult later though.
The tracks are well designed, and there are lots here too. Each one is based on a US city or state, with the first few cups being simple shapes and later cups being more adventurous.
Ok, this all sounds good but there are a few problems.
The later tracks are difficult for what seems like the wrong reasons. The cpu is totally unforgiving on the hardest mode, they will do perfect laps basically and any mistake makes catching up feel like more of a struggle than it should be.
Going off the track slows you to almost a halt which is truly irritating, the game is really fast- much faster than DKR or Mario, but neither of them were so punishing for grazing the trackside. The result is that you basically have to practice a whole lot on Time Trial so that you know the track layout.
A good thing is that the handling is unfaultable, it's very reactive and simple.
Time trial is fun, because the game is so fast and smooth. Like on Diddy Kong Racing and MK you can race a pre set ghost, which is very hard!
The items are not very good, pretty unneffective and not original at all.
The multiplayer is also quite good, you can do battles which is fun, but MK is better. The racing is great though, still really fast and smooth.
I would like to emphasise how fast this game is, it's a bit of a surprise being a Mickey Mouse game, but it is!
I highly reccommend this game, but I'd say get MarioKart if you want it for Multiplayer, or DKR for Single player. This is the 2nd best in both areas I think.
This game doesn't have the charm or personality of most Rare games. It's a bit of a step down from DKR as you can tell that graphics aside this game didn't have quite the same priority or effort put in. It all feels quite shallow compared to DKR.
For example, DKR had the Adventure mode with bosses and an overworld etc.
In terms of lastability... I haven't finished this, it does get hard. It's not that big though, there are plenty of tracks.
MarioKart is the shortest, but is definitely more multiplayer focused. DKR is huge, and challenging.
Basically, this is worthy of a reasonably priced purchase, but it's not the classic that MarioKart 64 is looked at as and isn't the classic that Diddy Kong Racing is. ;)

Mickey's Speedway USA is definetly worth buying on the Nintendo 64 because it has excellent graphics and great racers to choose from. It's like Mario Kart except I think better but the only bad thing is that it's a bit long on some of the tracks but it's still a great game!

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as mario kart   July 31, 2001

This is definatly a good game in it's own right. Basically you race the likes of Mikey mouse or goofey around well designed tracks.

It's similar to mario kart just the multiplayer mode is some what disappointing as there is none of the brilliant battle mode like the one seen in mario kart.

This is a good game if you want to be diffrent from the old game but don't expect a good multiplayer mode.
