Amazon.co.uk Review When the original Max Payne first hit the streets, the prediction was that it would spark a swathe of imitations--not least, imitations of the bullet-time feature. Yet it never really happened, meaning that Max Payne 2, like its predecessor, is a little bit unusual. At heart, the game is another over-the-shoulder actioner, with Payne once again in the midst of an intelligent, well-developed story replete with unpleasant turns. And once more, the story is presented in a dark comic-book style with moody voiceovers and deeply atmospheric music. It positively drips with detail. At times, it's mildly annoying that there's so much story to get through, but there's a fantastic game underneath it all. The levels primarily rely on action, and each feels suitably sombre, in line with the tone of Max's adventure. Bullet time is back, and the game does it far better than even Enter The Matrix could manage. It's an even more cinematic spectacle than before, yet a very handy gameplay device. You could argue that the game won't last too long and that it's perhaps a little linear, but these are very mild grumbles about a game that's engrossing, addictive and completely unmissable. Here's hoping we meet up with Max again, soon. --Simon Brew

5 stars for everything January 16, 2008 Mr. Daniel J. Grove (UK) On the face of it, a film noir detective game styled as a second person shooter, sounds like it could be awful. It easily could have been, but I can't fault this game, or its' predecessor. The plotline is great, the script well written and really draws you into the action. The graphics are nicely styled, with explosions and gunfire looking and sounding thoroughly realistic. The bullet time as per the first game is fantastic. Watching yourself dive in slow motion over a desk with a 9mm in each hand blazing away, never gets tired. A must have for any gamer.
Short but very sweet October 19, 2007 TG (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this with Max Payne 1 as they were so inexpensive. While I gave the first game 5 stars, I have dropped this a star because a) its a bit shorter b) the film noir style gets a bit grating after a while (OK, maybe I should have left them a few weeks in between) c) a case of 'seen it before' and (mainly) d) I just didn't have the same empathy for Max in this one. I guess he was a 'normal' man doing extraordinary things because he was wronged while, in the sequel, he's more the aggressor. Anyway, enough of that. The fact I still gave it 4 stars is testament to the fun that can be had at a super price.
ONE OF THE *B E S T* GAMES EVER! September 27, 2007 NeuroSplicer (Freeside, in Orbit) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
If you liked the first one, you will LOVE this one! One of the most atmospheric and immersive TPS ever made!! A story riveting like a noir graphic novel; a sexy sidekick; a heart-breaking story of loss and revenge. Corruption to the highest levels come head to head with a skewed honor code. Blade Runner meets James Ellroy - and you get to be the dark and moody anti-hero. Convenient controls, good AI, true physics, smart camera, realistic weapons, great voice-acting! BUY THIS GAME! You Will Love It Too!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
The best FPS I've ever played August 31, 2007 HAMISH MCCALLUM (Cambridge, Great Britain) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm no longer the greatest fan of FPS games, altho' I've played a fair few in my time (Doom, Duke Nukem, Far Cry, Half Life, Halo, etc. etc.). But this game is in a different class. The story is strong, the production values are impeccable, the art direction is flawless, as is the soundtrack. There are animated and gameplay sequences of breathtaking originality and beauty. There are even genuinely funny jokes, and plenty of them: how common is that, in FPS games? Some other reviewers have said that the game is short. I disagree: it's the right length for its story, which means that you never get that "here we go again" feeling. Once again, how often can you say that about an FPS game? If you have any interest in what digital games could (should) become - or if you simply want a FPS game that excels in every respect in its own right - then buy Max Payne 2.
Very Enjoyable-Didn't take me long to finish May 2, 2007 R. Surplice 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Only loses a star because it seemed short but for a few 's second hand you can't go wring with this. This game has a very good solid story line. The story is told in a gritty comic strip style. The game play is fast and furious. You control your player through a 3rd person perspective. You get some varied guns to use within the game. But the main thing that is going to get you through and use must use to your advantage is Bullet Time (slow-mo). Before they can even withdraw their finger from picking their nose you pop out from around the corner and fire 20 bullets into them. You can do dives in slow mo as well which can be used as a defense to avoid bullets or on the offensive-you can shoot at enemies whilst diving for cover. This game is really worth buying-but it is short. Weeks worth of play? My specs P4 3.6Ghz, 2GB RAM, X850 XT GFX Card.
