Editorial Reviews:

With flight sims and other more serious games becoming ever more marginalised on the PC, it's both a surprise and relief to find that the Silent Hunter series is still afloat. It certainly deserves its continued success though with not only the most exacting simulation of a submarine ever but by association also one of the most unique strategy action games ever devised. This latest iteration finds you commanding an Amercian sub in the Pacific theatre of World War II. The previous game, set in the Atlantic theatre, was already highly acclaimed but this sequel will feature a new dynamic campaign system which not only includes more diverse mission but also generates them on the fly as other ships and subs around you fight their own battles.

Although the game simulates every element of submarine warfare from the era in exacting detail, you are able to adjust the complexity of the gameplay to exactly how you want it. If you want to plot torpedo angles and time charges yourself then you can, but equally you can just up periscopes and fire away at whatever you see. Crew management will also be simplified from the last game, so that everyone works much more independently, especially as they begin to gain experience and receive promotions. Also expanded is the multiplayer element which now allows you to team up to fight co-operative with friends online. You can also fight it out in teams, with one side playing the role of escort ships and the other the subs. As ever the graphics are looking fantastic - far better than you'd expect for such a complex simulation - and provide the icing on the cake for one of the last great high brow franchises on the PC.

I was a fan of the Original Silent Hunter, however Silent Hunter 2 was much the same game as the original and surprise, surprise so is Silent Hunter4. Graphics have been improved but beyond that the game is much the same. If you have played earlier versions then save your money, I wish I had !!!!

After reading negative reviews about poor performance and having to download service packs i was hesitant to purchase this game, but i dived in and bought it with first class postage ( 3.11) and it arrived 2 days later, not bad really.

I got it out of the box and installed onto Vista Home Premium, took 4 minutes on my PC, which is impressive. No keycodes needed, just a nice install. I then went to register my product and downloaded the 200mb service pack. after installing this, i have spent around 20minutes at my computer.

I then rebooted after some windows update and then launched into a career. (on easy mode). Completing the first patrol fairly quickly, after discovering how to speed up time!

Graphics are excellent, waves and other boats are perfect, you can see enemy destroyers lay depth charges on you and watch their crews abandon ship as your fish slam into them creating nice holes!

However, (there is a but) If you work 0-5 Monday to Friday, make sure that you stay home for the delivery, It is too big for your postbox and will go back to the post office unless you are at home. At least it comes with the postie and not in a van at 1400 or something silly.

So this will come with the rest of your post, not bad really. I got it for 16.95 which is a good deal. although now it has gone back up... a shame really,

Get this one over the standard version as you get cool extras, like a arm patch(who is going to wear that?!!)

Anyway, its a fun game, good graphics and not that many bugs... or i havent found any anyway.

2 out of 5 stars Buggy - but fun   January 23, 2008

I've not much more to add than has already been said, but...

I bought this game when it was first released and it was nearly unplayable due to a number of bugs. The whole game reeked of rushed development and lack of testing and QA. I believe that, at the time I write this, four patches in total have been released and they address the worst of the bugs. Regardless, browsing various forums (subsim's forums for example) will quickly reveal that this game still has many faults and to be honest, isn't really a finished game. Shame on UBI!

Despite that, now that enough bugs have been fixed to make this playable it is quite good fun, assuming you're into 'Simulation' games.

Personally I'd wait untill this game finally makes it into the 5 bargain bin before buying. It still has problems that need to be addressed by the developers and is basically not finished and ready for release yet.

4 out of 5 stars Damn good game   January 11, 2008

I used to have SH3 on my machine, which I enjoyed until I discovered the StareForce Saga (Google Starforce to see what I mean)and removed it out of personal protest. I've watched the poor reviews for game for a while, and could not resist buying it when the price fell below a tenner! I had to download about 700MB of 4 patches the day before in readiness...
I installed the game, and patched it one by one up to the latest 1.4...
It runs a treat on my Athlon 64 3400+ single core, 2 Mb Ram, and 7800 GTS card, even with AAx2 and AFx8 at 1680x1050(with slowish frame rates).
I loved SH3 and this version is tops! better graphics, better ship models, and the ocean effects are great. The game play seems challenging...
If you like thinking games this is a good one, and as an ex-mariner of several years (when I was younger) to go to sea again but this time as Captain is a dream come true.
A great game so far.

I have followed Silent Hunter since its first arrival on the scene, buying each new release. This was no different.
I installed the game, applied the latest patch, V 1.3 at this time and ran the game. i took the defaults i was offered for graphics, sound etc.
I managed to play for about 10 mins before the first lockup occurred, repeating sound and a high pitched squeal from my sound card and a garbled display. needed to power off. Further attempts to play resulted in either crash to desktop or the same as above. i even removed my sound card and enabled my onboard sound.
I refuse to start buying extra hardware to troubleshoot a boxed game that should work, that's what you pay for right?
Save your money until this "BETA" software is fully fixed.... or buy one of the second hand versions to minimize costs if you must.

Verdict: DISSAPOINTING!!
