Amazon.co.uk Preview
It's easy to see why there was so much fighting amongst the console manufacturers to try and make this game a format exclusive. Where early launch titles may have disappointed this game not only looks like a next generation game but it plays like it too. Taken at face value the story casts you as an Arabic fighter in 1191, out to assassinate the nine Western leaders of the Third Crusade. There is more to the story than that though making it more than simple historical adventure it first seems.

Since it's developed by many of the same team behind Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, it's no surprise to find the game using many of the same ideas. With the bold claim that you can climb on or over anything in the game world that sticks out more than two inches, this allows incredible freedom of movement, with a style of acrobatics heavily influenced by Parkour/free running. The game also innovates in terms of combat, with each of the face buttons controlling a different area of the body, rather like a marionette. As such one button controls the feet, one your open hand, one your weapon hand and the other your head.

As an assassin stealth plays an important role in the game too, but here it's often a case of hiding in plain sight as you mill around inside large crowds of people. Everyone will react to you realistically though, so if you go around pushing people out of the way, or even killing them, the crowd will react and report you. With stunning graphics and genuinely innovative gameplay this is destined to be one of the most important releases of the year.

this game is absolutely awful, how people give it good reviews is beyond me, as it is a waste of money.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed!!   September 25, 2008

I Bought my Xbox 360 for 2 games 1 was this and 1 is Far-cry 2 (which i hope will be awesome) getting back to the review,

You probaly heard this a lot of times but the visuals are stunning even on standard tv but the gameplay is zero its just to repetive you have to assasinate someone or pick-pockets etc: again an again so it gets a litle tyring and boring but lucky for me the CD stopped working for i dont know what reason so i got a full refund from amazon and i bought another game

Word of advice : If you really want the game you can rent it or if you want to keep it you can bye a used one for about 10 pounds.

4 out of 5 stars Good game, definitely worth buying but could be improved   September 23, 2008
Mr. Bj White (UK)
Im surprised by the amount of people giving this game poor reviews. Although this game does have its weaknesses, I feel that it is way better than the one/two stars awarded by some. If possible I would have given it 3.5stars but I gave it 4 because, after completing it earlier today, it definitely deserves more than 3stars. To give you a summary of the game in my opinion I'll start with the good points:

Firstly the setting for assassins creed is the best ive seen in years, and as many have said the entire game is absolutely stunning - particularly if you have a HDTV. The storyline supporting the gameplay is good, keeping you guessing and providing the inevitable twist at the end, while still leaving you waiting for the next installment. The story is deep enough to keep you engrossed and mixes historical accuracy with fiction and conspiracy - and at the end is just complex enough to have you digging further into it to see what it all meant! Finally the creators have got the fight-engine and movement physics spot on - the way Altair runs, jumps and fights all looks and feels very good, and the numerous ways you kill enemies with his cinematic 'counter-attack' moves just doesnt get old.

So onto the bad points - the glaring one that really takes the five-star rating away from this game is that it does get very repetitive towards the end. The 'viewpoint', 'information' and 'save citizen' missions just become a chore by the end and they could really have done with a bit more variation to the gameplay.

The other big annoyance in the game was that, as an assassin, there wasnt much scope for a really stealthy kill. Nearer the start of the game you can move around cities largely unnoticed and plan/execute a kill on one of the targets fairly stealthily, but towards the end gaurds frequently just chase and attack you on site, and theres literally no physical way to kill your main targets without the need to chase him all over the city and fight about 20 gaurds first! On one I kept reloading the game, and tried approaching from every concievable route with no success - as soon as you enter the vicinity a gaurd yells 'kill the infidel' and youre in the middle of a dozen soldiers with the target fleeing the area! They explain during the game that your noteriety is rising due to your previous successes, which is fair enough, but for the next game it needs to be made possible for people to kill a target and leave the area without ever having to engage bodygaurds, or without even being seen. It just doesnt seem very assassin-like to have to kill 20people before getting anywhere near your intended target.

Overall this game is an entertaining one - it looks stunning, plays well and has an engaging storyline. The developers do need to work on the repetitiveness and the way the game prevents the user from executing a really stealthy kill - which take the game from a 5star to a 3.5. This is not a game for those that get bored quickly or for those wishing to plan and perform truly masterful kills - for that try Hitman: Blood money (very good game).

Close to being a true great, but not quite there yet. I'll be keeping my copy to go back to every now and again and anxiously awaiting the next installment - if the improvements are there and the setting is just as rich, we could be seeing one of the best games ever in its category.

2 out of 5 stars Was irritated, not entertained.   August 13, 2008

I heard so much about this game being brilliant that I purchased it on friday. It was back at the store on the monday being exchanged for something that I would actually enjoy.

I don't deny that the graphics are quite possibly the most stunning thing I've ever seen, but while they might help it along it's the gameplay that makes a game brilliant. This is far from brilliant.

The first mission will epp you interested, the second may do, but by the third you realise that the whole stealth issue can just be completley ignored and you can simply hack and slash your way through the missons and complete them in double quick time. I also found the controls finaky at best, especially the gentle move command, which (on the training mission I have to add) had me tearing my hair out as the computer dropped all its vases for the millionth time (you'll understand if you have it, or have played it)

If you really have to satisfy your curiosity, then I beg you to rent this game from blockbuster for the week and save your hard earned cash, because chances are if you have 7 free hours you will ahve completled it in that time. Overall, not the worst game ever, but the gameplay flaws and the sameness of the missions bored me to tears.
