5 out of 5 stars A killer strategy game   January 13, 2007

My son Josh (aged 7 3/4) and I (a bit older) both love this game. Josh even prefers it to Pokemon currently which is saying something. I bought the game just before Christmas, and since Josh appropriated it from me, most of his Christmas presents haven't had much of a look in yet (Santa will not be happy!).

The battles are the main element of the game. The battles can be quite challenging to win without losing any of your team. You really do get to care about your team so we often find ourselves repeating a chapter several times (or more) to avoid losing anyone.

You act as the strategist for the team. To be successful you have to select the right team for each chapter and then use them as a team exploiting the strengths of each character (cavalier, knight, archer, mage, monk, thief, bard etc). You can recruit new members to your team throughout the game if you talk to them with the right member of your team.

The story is arguably incidental to the battles but makes the game much more involving than a simple series of battles could be. You find out more about the characters which helps you to get attached to them and view them as individuals.

The first few chapters act as a tutorial to teach you the basics of the game.

I got this game for Christmas, as an afterthought really, but Im still playing it now, months later, (time of writing: 1st April 05, and thats no April's fool). The lifespan is immense, the 31 chapters will keep you going for a good while, and once you've polished off the main game there's the extras and the compulsion to get a better rank. Its one of those games where you get quite attached to the characters and story. Each charcter is different, not just identikit units arranged by type, and one of the key elements is that if a character is defeated in battle, they're gone for good. This is just one of many variables that affects your strategy. Although its always a case of defeating an onslaught of enemies (with several variations) it isnt limited, and the fact that all the charcters are different means the army you put together will be unique every time. very addictive gaming, challenging in places, but you'll keep coming back to it. Excellent stuff.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST gameboy game out there   September 30, 2004

Fire emblem is one of the greatest games ever to grace the gameboy screen. It is as in depth as any other habdheld RPG and even more addictive than the rest.

You command a small group of fighters who must unite to defeat the powerful Nergal before he can destroy the world. The first few hours are training where you play as Lyn and then after that the game branches out and you have three main characters, each unique in their own way. One of the great strengths of Fire Emblem is that EVERY character is entirley unique, none are the same and therefore there are limitless possibilities to your amry and their strength.

The game lasts over 20 hours and once completed there are further modes to play, giving a long long life. If you own advance wars then this should be the next game on your shopping list and if you don't own advance wars but have a brain and appreciate a good game, you should buy it anyway.

Fire Emblem is truly one of the rare great games that we get today.

5 out of 5 stars '...Sword spinning, axe twirling frenzy...'   September 18, 2004

If you own and love Final Fantasy: Tactics Advance you will LOVE this game - and vice versa. It is very similar yet has some nice differences which make it a great partner with FF:TA.
This is the kind of partnership where if manufacturers put two and two together, they could build one of the greatest games of all time.

Pros:
* Fantastic battle sequences - though a little short. Your characters execute the attacks exactly how YOU want to see them. A very 'Lord of the Rings style', sword spinning, axe twirling frenzy of skillful attacks!
* Every character has a strong background story and personality. They even have compatabilities with other characters that you find; forming 'Support' values; forming skill enhancements and more.
* When a character is defeated in battle, they can never fight again. Which really makes you feel for every character, making sure that you aren't reckless.
* The storyline is the most intense I have EVER seen packed into such a small game cartridge. With love, revenge, twists, villains, heros, dragons and magic!
* There are many different weapons, even legendary weapons with special abilities which you can share out with your characters.
* Characters have set classes, but with certain conditions they can upgrade to something even more powerful, and sometimes learn how to wield more types of weapons.
* The music is indulging and unique, it works well with every situation in-game.
* As you progress through the game, each chapter becomes harder and harder, on soem chapters, i have spent atleast 3 days trying to complete them! Why this isn't in the 'Cons'?? Because it makes the game far more challengnign and keeps you coming back for more.
* Playing it on your TV using the Game Boy Player is a whole new experience, that is undescribal in comparison to playing on the GBA.

Cons:
* Still trying to find one!

Nintendo Offical Magazine gives Fire Emblem 91%. And this is totally agreeable. You NEED this game!
