plad 313 (noeth-east england)
i think that this game is a must have.I got it for chrismas and i have not stopped playing on it.i think sony have craked it this game is not for the faint hearted with gore and more gore .it only works for the slimline ps2 and if the lazer head is dirty it will not load up so use some lazer head cleaner onit. if you need help on a level go on the offfial web site through playstion.com ,GoW web page has a black background and click on message board there you will find what you want.

5 out of 5 stars God of War is almost God of Gaming..........   January 2, 2008

This game is spectacular - it has great, often stunning visuals, an interesting storyline, great use of mythology, bone-crunching fighting, tons of special moves and upgrades etc.
It soes exactly what it says on the tin, its a solid beat 'em up, but with a bit more depth than your average fighting game.
Negatives? a couple.....can prove very difficult sometimes, and this gets annoying when fighting the same enemy 10 times because you keep getting killed. Also, some of the camera angles are a little arkward, making it hard to see and fight properly.
That said, the combination of puzzles and fighting is fantastic, and this game is HIGHLY recommended.

If after playing this game you think that the fixed POV camera is "a bit annoying" then you are probably clinically dead. This is the second best game on the PS2... God of War 2 being banjo string strokinly brilliant. Enjoy!

God of War is arguably the best PS2 game on the market, what initially looked like a standard hack-n-slash affair surprised us all with it's uniquely fun blend of great storytelling, puzzle-solving and graphic violence. It does at first seem like yet another generic game where you cut up zombies for hours on end but this impression is quickly dispelled at the first boss battle (about twenty minutes into the game at most), in which you take on a massive sea hydra from aboard a sinking ship and eventually have to kebab said hydra on the ship's mast. So, what makes it so very good?
First there's the core combat system, despite the puzzles this is a game first and foremost about killing lots of mythical creatures in unbelievably bloody ways. You're only weapons are a pair of long chains burned into the forearms of Kratos (Your character), at the other end of which are two machetes; these are incredibly versatile weapons, allowing you to swing the blade at the end of the chain and hack an enemy to bits, impale him on one blade then throw him into a friend, swing upwards to throw him into the air then throw your own blade into him before pulling back on the chain to slam him into the ground, and many other improvised ways to cause mayhem. The action is mostly just big free-form combos, but you are able once an enemy has been weakened to hit grapple and enter into a series of on screen prompts to allow Kratos to dispatch them in an elaborate and often extremely violent way.
The violence is something which needs to be mentioned. This game is an 18 for a reason, Kratos isn't a sadist but he's incredibly brutal and the game's violence really is amped up as far as they could put it without becoming manhunt.
The puzzles in this game are very big in scale but not particularly difficult and though they provide a pleasant break from the wall-to-wall bloodshed of the rest of the game they aren't actually as enjoyable over all. But none are boring and they do bring a bit more variety to things.
The plot of this game follows an ex-general of the spartan army who is sent by the gods to kill Ares - the god of war. We aren't told why Kratos looks so strange (White skin and dark red tattoos) but this is revealed as the plot unveils itself. Kratos is initially fun to play as but by no means a likable character, ruthlessly sacrificing everyone in his way for his own gain and completely merciless he just comes off as a psychopath. In the opening scene of the game we see Kratos throw himself off a cliff before a flash back to a few weeks before, it is these last few weeks of his life that form the game. As the game progresses there are a series of flashbacks to Kratos' past which very slowly reveal where he came from and how he came to be how he is, this slow-burning attitude is a refreshing change to the 'Here you are, this is your motivation, go! go! go!' plots of most games. The pay-off of the plot is huge and by the end of the game you really want to kill the god of war, and Kratos starts looking like the good guy (sort of).
The production values of the game are also excellent. Graphics are as good as anything on the PS2 and there are a few moments where it's just breathtakingly beautiful. The music sounds like a film score by John Williams and works perfectly with the action on screen. The voice acting for the characters stands up well and allows the plot to gain some subtler edges (eg. the sexual tension between Athena and Kratos) without being difficult to follow. The levels are almost all very well designed and most of the flaws are only minor irritants and nothing likely to stop you from progressing, another impressive point is the complete lack of load times, the game flows from beginning to end with only occasional pauses in action with the word loading down the bottom of the screen, but totaled up these are less than a minute of game-play and almost never happen.
This game hasn't got any bad points. The worst thing is probably that levels are occasionally a bit clunky in design but there must be only two or three minor cases of this in the whole game.
It's a bloody, brutal, epic, thrilling experience that keeps your pulse rate high and your enjoyment levels higher. If you only play one game for the PS2, make sure it's this one.

I've never bothered to write a review before. What's the point, when other people have already done it for you. However, I am so gobsmacked by God Of War that I simply have to tell as many people as possible. It is quite simply the best game I've ever played. The graphics are unsurpassed on the PS2. Some rooms/scenes only require you to be there for a few seconds, yet the attention to detail is amazing. I find myself returning to places even though I've no real reason to be there - I'm just admiring the graphics.

And it's not just the visuals. The sound also really adds to the experience. Sometimes minimalist, sometimes creepy, sometimes full-on thumping soundtrack. In all scenarios the designers have got it spot on.

Finally, the gameplay. There's plenty of adrenalin-pumping fighting, but this game has so much more. It's not just about button-bashing. You actually have to use your brain too - both when fighting your enemies and when trying to figure out how to overcome one of the many problems/obstacles you encounter.

Not many games grab my attention like this one has. As I've grown older, got married, etc I've found less and less time to fire-up my PS2. However, as I approach the end of God Of War, I find myself wanting to stay up all night. Even once I've completed it, this is a game I will return to again and again. But wait, what's this....God Of War 2 is now available. Damn, looks like I'm in for plenty more late nights.
