A triumph for combat over story May 31, 2008 I. Lehnert (Derby/Blackburn, UK) Dark Sector is a funny old game. Playing as a secret opps agent called Hayden Tenno, you're sent to a Russian state on one final mission, but are infected with a deadly virus that has been ravaging the locals. Somehow, it has served to make you stronger, including metalising your body and giving you a triple bladed boomerang potruding from your hand called a glaive. Your basic quest is to shoot and slash your way through the story, separating as many limbs from your enmies as possible and causing as much destruction as you can along the way. There's no need to go too much in depth with the story, because it really isnt all that great. It never fully explores itself, presenting characters you dont need to care about and often leaving you alone for a few hours before popping up with a random cut scene, giving a quite disjointed feel. Yet Dark Sector still has enough going for it. Besides the fact that throwing your glaive at enemies in the hope of causing decapitations and lacerations never gets old, the combat system is fairly challenging, with a few fairly tricky boss battles. It utilises a Gears of War style point-and-shoot-from-cover system, which might sound dull but suits the game well. Also, the game's atmosphere is constantly thick and delciously bleak, and at times really can grab you. Coupled with a host of tricky enemies, the game presents a fairly balanced challenge. On the whole, Dark Sector is worth its asking price for the glaive and all its harrowing possibilities. The developer's do need a few more lessons on telling a story, because a fairly promising premise was ruined with poor implementation here. That said, the combat and atmoshpherics were more than enough to see me through to the game's end. An unbalanced treat.
brilliant but flawed! May 30, 2008 GREYFOX at first, i never knew this game existed until it slowly creped up and announced itself! seeing the videos for it got me interested but i was still unsure as whether to buy it or not however i was not completely disappointed when i eventually made the purchase! the gameplay, graphics and sounds are awesome with the glaive sounds truly spectacular but the story was badly produced however i feel that the story could have been improved. it does however has it fair share of flaws i.e. leaning against walls, peeking round corners? , bodies in the air and so on however an excellent game with interesting features. hopefully the potential sequel will have fixed all the bugs and has a better story behind it with new features and abilities.
Innovative gameplay but poor multiplayer May 29, 2008 Silverfrog (Leeds UK) Intro It's a third person shooter set in as a horror/action game with minor puzzles to solve. Story You play Hayden Tenno, a black-ops agent who's sent to clean up biohazard situations in Lasria. After being attacked by Nemesis, Hayden gets infected and his right arm mutates to allow him to create and use a glaive. The story follows Hayden where he learns of his powers and its source and his efforts to prevent a wide release of the virus to the populous. Game play Singleplayer The single player has an involving story that keeps you interested throughout. The style of the game is horror/action and is reminiscent of Gears of War in setting. Items of interest like ammo, weapons and objectives are highlighted to the player by shimmering to make them easier to spot and pick up. The controls are very easy to pick up and are similar to many shooters (LT to aim, ammo X to reload, dodge/take cover etc). Similar to Gears of War, when you run, the surroundings around you are elongated to give more of a sense of running. Almost all cut scenes are non-interactive which is a shame, however it is nice to be given the opportunity to skip cinematic sequences. Digital Extremes have introduced a great innovative fighting style - the use of a Glaive (a three bladed throwable weapon) You can dual wield with handguns only and it's a blast to use. You can throw the glaive and chop limbs off and further in the game you develop the ability to adjust the flight path of the glaive. This comes in handy in scouting an area without exposing yourself too. There are interesting finisher moves that are different depending upon the enemy however they are only limited to face to face attacks (you unfortunately can't sneak behind and kill them which is a shame). You can also retrieve weapons, ammo and Rubles with your glaive which is extremely handy. Handguns, rifles and shotty's can be upgraded in a `Black Market' which appear every so often during the game which are paid for by Rubles that you collect along the way. You can also sell frags that you find or weapons that you have. Unfortunately as the enemies weapons are locked to non-infected people you can only use them on site for a very limited period of time. No upgrades are available for the glaive. It is very frustrating that there are no gauges during gameplay so don't expect any help in boss fights for example. You also don't know how long you've got before able to re-use your time limited camouflage that you develop later in the game. There may be a bug within the game because if you keep on retreating when overwhelmed, the enemy don't follow and are easy to finish off. There don't seem to be levels of difficulties to play either. Multiplayer There are 2 types of gameplay available with only 5 maps which is a bit too limited. Infected You're in a group of non-infected troopers fighting against 1 person who is infected (and has the ability to go invisible and use their glaive) and whoever kills them gets infected themselves and the round is over. The newly infected member then plays the next round as the solo infected person. Epidemic Pretty much team battle although only one team member is infected and has the glaive. All other troopers can respawn but there is a time delay. The point of the game is to hunt and kill the infected member - once he is dead, all other players of the team stop respawning. Multiplayer is no where near as good as single player with limited gameplay types and maps too. The multiplayer games played were fairly laggy but this may be due to a UK connection to a Non-UK host Graphics The graphics were a bit disappointing in that there is a very limited destructible environment (only ammo boxes and small drums moved and glass shatters). Shooting at lights or most other objects didn't do anything. The cut scenes to the black market are a bit abrupt and they could have had a smoother transition here. Otherwise, the graphics are decent with nothing too groundbreaking. Sound There is good eerie atmospheric music throughout the game but weapons sound effects are a little poor (like guns and even the glaive is a little silly). It's great that as with many 1st/3rd person shooters the music hots up when there is action on the horizon and dies down to an eerie sound on quieter moments. Final Thoughts A great game with very innovative weapons play and the style is reminiscent of Gears of War. Singleplayer mode is great fun and the story is reasonably long with good support from music and graphics. However the game overall is let down hugely by the multiplayer restrictions as well as more than limited destructible environment. Worth renting if you liked Gears of War and has cool but no real replay value. Pros - innovative weapons play with glaive, cool chopping limbs off enemies, good music Cons - limited interactive environment, poor multiplayer options, no real replay value (1 singleplayer difficulty)
A Decent 3RD Person Shooter April 28, 2008 S. Harris (Swindon, England) This game is great. If you want an amazing third person shooter to keep you occupied for a week- buy this game. But when I say "week" it actually only lasts about 5-7 hours depending on skill. But then again, all games seem to be this length these days. Lots of magazines and websites critized this game for the story. But at least it tries to do a story. it may not be oscar winning stuff but it is decent enough for a game. GOW didn't even have a story! Yet they don't really mention that in all of the reviews you read... Na, IGN.com and OXM definetly aren't corrupt... Any way, if you liked GOW and other games that delpy the cover mechanic, then you will definetly like this. If you like action and shooting just buy this. What are you waiting for? This kept me going until I got GTA 4. Well, I'm hoping to get GTA 4 tomorrow. But buy this game! It is definetly underrated!!!
Something to be kept in the dark? April 22, 2008 Finlay Meldrum (Kirriemuir) I dont know if i just set my standards really high for this game,or rushed through it (took me around 2 weeks with on/off play to complete) but it really isnt as great as alot of people are making it out to be. There is meant to be a plot that is very similar to Resident Evil 4 with some sort of plot to take over the world with a mutant virus. Again like in RE4 you get infected with said virus, this time around though you get some fairly cool powers to tackle the evil doers and well millions of grunts to work through. The enemy comes in 3 kinds, standard soldier and mutant freaks to demon creatures with only the soliders proving satisfying to finish off,as with the others your dismembering glaive seems to slice through them, and do very little physical damage. There are aspects of Gears Of War and RE4 here that in some aspects work well, the cover system is pretty effective although the enemy AI is well moronic to say the least soaking up bullets left right and centre and only on occasion moving to cover, the only kind of threat you really have here is when AI rushes you for no reason or you seem to be out numbered, after a fairly easy firefight. The game is far from perfect and it is short, and if im honest its easy, the boss battles can usually be over in 15 mins with only 1 attempt needed to beat them. The idea is a good if flawed one and it feels dated, the graphics are quite impressive but there are a few glitches here and there which could have easily been removed since the game has been in development for over 4 years or so. If you want an adventure/action game go for RE4 or GOW and if you really have to,rent this first.
