4 out of 5 stars Strange at first but a massive grower.   July 2, 2008
CR78 (Manchester UK)
Let me start off by saying that I used to hate all the FIFA games since FIFA 98 (Road to World Cup) and was a massive, massive PES fan. Every year I'd drool over the latest PES and play it to death until the next version came out. This continued all the way up to PES 2008 which I found to be absolutely shocking. My how things have changed. FIFA 08 actually blows PES away on gameplay now aswell as having all the squads, kits and bells & whistles that EA have always had.

Anyway, EURO 2008. I wanted to start off by saying how FIFA 08 is the best football game around on any console just to let people know my feelings on the franchise as a whole. After hammering FIFA 08 since I got it, I raised an eyebrow at Euro 2008. Of course I knew EA would throw out another cash-in for the tournament, but I figured I'd take a look anyway.

The demo on XBox Live is kinda ok but isn't really the best example to go off. When I first played I have to admit I was pretty dissapointed that the gameplay and camera views have been changed since FIFA 08 as to me that was already brilliant as it was. However props to EA for at least making significant changes to the game rather than throwing out FIFA 08 with Euro teams at full price.

After giving the full game a shot and having now played a few games I must say it's an excellent game. Is it better than FIFA 08? Well I'm not sure on that. It's as good for enjoyment value and of course if you want the full Euro tournament game with the better player faces and manager faces etc then you need this game. Overall I couldn't say choose either as both are excellent games in their own right and can be enjoyed together. Normally I'm against companies cashing in and I've voiced my discontent about EA several times in the past years, but this time around I do think if you're a fan of football and both club and international competitions then you need both games.

The gameplay in Euro 2008 is different from FIFA 08. I wouldn't say it's better but also it's definitely not worse. It's a very fun game to play, very involving and has all the tournament fancy stuff like you'd expect. I definitely advise trying to rent or borrow the game rather than just going off the demo on Live as it's much more fun when you sit down and play the game properly a few times.

Plus Points: Excellent graphics and presentation, great game engine again and a wealth of European teams to take to Euro 2008

Negatives: No Netherlands players again (wrong names) and the same goes for Wales for some reason too.

Definitely worth investing in. Let's hope FIFA 09 is just as good as these or even better.

5 out of 5 stars Good, could be better.   June 27, 2008

Ok here's the deal, yes it has some very good gameplay nice tricks you can do and I love the way you can choose how you celebrate a goal. The only downside is they don't seem to have all the licensing for the teams. i.e check out the names of the Dutch players.

But for me by far and away the most annoying aspect of this game is on-line play. I am a casual gamer and don't spend 7 hours + a day playing this!! Yet whenever I set up an on-line game and try to play players who are supposed to be my skill level I nearly always end up playing against players who are miles better, the whole experience on line is just frustrating beyond belief!!

1 out of 5 stars worst football game of last 5 years   June 26, 2008

hi, this is an awful game and would not reccomend it to anyone unless you are after the achievements. the glitches are annoying as hell but mostly just downright laughable. for example i kicked the ball towards the touchline it was intercepted by a ghost aparently who then crossed it in and the ball was neatly finished by casper him self. i found this very annoying aand the button delay is ridicolous, you press pass and then by the time the player responds it is past the opportunity, i would not pay good m oney for this game, its plain and simple awful. rushed out with glitches galore!!! fifa 08 anyone??

3 out of 5 stars Better Than FIFA 08, But...   June 12, 2008

What is it with EA Sports? They seem to be able to create football games that are almost perfect, but with enough annoying elements to make you want to tear your hair out.

And if FIFA 08 annoyed you, so will this game. It is marginally better, yes - dribbling and control look and feel more realistic, it's less easy to beat players and constantly score from crosses, through balls actually have a chance of reaching their target, and the power bar for passing and shooting is definitely an improvement. The whole gameplay experience has been bumped up a notch for sure.

But, the same old niggles still won't go away. On semi-pro difficulty, I can smash top teams like Spain, Italy etc 6-0 or 7-0. Bump it up a notch to professional and teams like Andorra suddenly turn into Brazil, with players that seem to have a force-field around them, leaving your defenders unable to knock them off the ball as they go on a 70-yard run, twisting and turning like Ronaldinho. Your own CPU controlled players still seem to have been given the intelligence of the local pub team, as they run right next to you instead of into space, or better yet, bump into you. Players are still sluggish to react, etc.

It's a great game, 90% perfect. The other 10% for me, is still too annoying. So annoying that less than a week after buying it I snapped my disc in half. Not in a rage, but to stop myself playing it - that's how good the good elements of the game are. If EA could only improve the AI and wild discrepancy in the difficulty levels they would have the perfect football game, hands down.

It's close, but no cigar.
