Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Like your racing games fast, furious, and full of spectacular smashes? You're in luck. With Burnout, Acclaim remove all pretence of going for a serious simulation and instead serve up a delicious dish of pure arcade fun on the PlayStation 2. There are two key selling points to the game--the speed the action runs at, and the spectacular crashes. To facilitate these, the set-up couldn't be more straightforward, with the aim simply being to be first past the post. You can increase your chances of this by driving more dangerously, although that comes with obvious pitfalls in the shape of those aforementioned smashes. Suffice it to say, though, to get through the game you're going to have to take your chances.

Contrary to the serious approach of Gran Turismo 3, this is foot-to-the-pedal stuff, and tremendously good fun to play. And when you do put your proverbial foot down, get ready to move, for this is a blisteringly fast title that deceptively requires more concentration than it would first appear. The downside is that this won't appeal to those who like their racing games nice and serious, nor to those looking for anything particularly innovative. For Burnout has few qualms about marrying the multimedia power of the PlayStation 2 to a game engine that forsakes bells and whistles for speed, destruction and sheer good fun. Fortunately, in this case, it's all the better for it, making it yet another PS2 four wheel treat. --Simon Brew

2 out of 5 stars Fun and Irritating!?!   November 29, 2003

A race through rush-hour traffic is a great idea...

But the graphics lack anti-aliasing, which sometimes makes it difficult to see what you're about to crash into(!); and limted time to get to each checkpoint can mean that even if you are winning the race, you can still fail to finish!

A great idea, but showing its age!

How on EARTH can anyone complain so much about this game?
OK, it might not have hundreds of cars to race with, or loads of tracks to race on, but it's *FUN*!!!

4 out of 5 stars Original and FUN!   March 11, 2003

Burnout is a great game, fun and easy to use.
I played it on a friends PS2 in 2001 and enjoyed it immensely, I hadn't seen anything like it before, and there still isn't anything exactly like it.
The idea is to race through crowded streets, avoiding (or causing) the huge crashes that are the selling point of this game.
There are extra cars to unlock, and a couple of good ones to start with. The only complaint one might have is the slightly limited nature of the game, but at a platinum price, it is worth having (or save up for Burnout2, much better by all acounts!)
For those who like a bit of fun with their driving games without having to devote hours locked in a dark room just to negotiate the first corner.... Burnout is your game!
Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Game!!   January 3, 2003

Burnout is without a doubt the best racing game I've ever played for *any* console! The pure adrenaline rush you get from tearing down streets, avoiding oncoming traffic and staying ahead of your opponents is just mind-blowing! Really, this is edge of your seat stuff. I've read the bad reviews that criticise the lack of cars, even someone who says the manual is lying when it says you can drive trucks - well these people obviously haven't given the game a chance, as you *can* acquire new cars (including a truck) when you complete the Head to Head races! So people, get your facts straight before you mouth off about the game's faults. The game is difficult, yes, but if it wasn't, where would the challenge be?? This is a game that gets you returning time and time again for another fix, and the multiplayer option is ace! :)
