Innovative & Original Sony Production May 7, 2006 Mr. B. Pollard (Durham, England.) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Set in the golden age of feudal Japan, and actually retaining the original Japanese dialects used in the games creation (instead of cheesy American voice-overs for instance) this game, whilst short lived, marks high on the gameplay stakes; especially in mass battle scenes which are beautifully choreographed if you can combine the right combos. The real time rendering of the game, the attention to graphical detail in the background, is quite breathtaking for a PS2 game. The best feature of course is the Matrix-esque time manipulation feature. Where you can slow down time to anticipate an enemies movement and perform combos. Finally, if you're into surround sound, the Dolby 5.1 / Pro Logic sound options will more than satisfy your needs.
Great game so why only three stars. January 2, 2006 S. BUTTON (UK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
It is far too short that is why but if you ignore that fact it has great gameplay and the graphics are lovely the music suits the game very well. It plays a bit like Devil May Cry and Ominusha (And so it should do considering it was made by the same guy Sony obviously funded it rather than Capcom). There is a fun new addition though where you can launch a kumai attack which allows you to anticipate an enemys attack before he does it so you can counter (You can even do this on bosses but a well timed button press or sequence of button presses is required to finish them or do damage properly). You get items of of bosses that you can use to make more powerful weapons but you have to pull of a successful kumai attack on them first. Overall this is a great game to rent or buy if you can find it cheap somewhere it is near flawless but just far too short which is shame.
A beautiful, historical and best game this year in my view January 2, 2006 praying_mantis (United kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Genji is the best ‘RPG’ flashy cut-'em-up action adventure game out this year. Genji is a historic samurai adventure set in feudal Japan which makes the game even better. The gameplay is similar to Devil may cry and special to Onimusha. If you are a fan of DMC and Onimusha you defiantly will like Genji. The graphics, art design and sound in Genji are excellent. The characters and environments have a specifically Japanese feel to them, with elaborately dressed characters, ornate environments, and mystical otherworlds. The world is filled with great-looking scenery, including shimmering koi ponds, crumbling ruins, misty waterfalls, and forest paths lined with all kinds of vividly colored vegetation, when I play the game at least for an hour I just observe the scenery because it’s brilliant. The characters are fairly detailed, as well. In all the game is worthy to buy and to be kept forever.
Most Amazing game you will ever buy December 24, 2005 Phantom (Rhyl, Denbighshire United Kingdom) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is by far the best game I have bought in a long time and saying a lot because I onlt just bought NBA Live06 and Battlefield 2:Modern Combat both good games in there own right. When I put this game in to my PS2 for the first time. I was thinkin will it just be another Onimusha game. But as I was thinkin about it the intro came on and it was a beautiful site the intro had graphics just like a movie would of had. At first I was thrown back at the amount of time and effort that must of been put in too make such a game intro. Now we get to the game itself, the controls are easy to play with but take a long time to master. You can just run in and keep hitting the square button and hack and slash or learn the diffrent moves that will make some of the other enemies run and hide in fear. The game play graphics are nothing to laugh at either. When you pick up that controller and begin to play the game you begin to feel like you are part of it and because of this I have not been able to put it down but only to write this review. So I say if you want to buy a game that you could play over and over again then buy this or you will be sorry. And if there are some of you who want to be diffrent and say that this is a rubbish game then you do not know what you are playing and should have a think about it.
