PS3 Cooling Fan & Stand - Excellent Value November 13, 2008 Rant or Rave (Manchester, UK) I originally purchased this fan & stand last Christmas for my son's 60gb PS3. I was concerned by reports of consoles overheating and this product had the best reviews. Anyway, when I opened the packaging I was amazed at the quality of the fan and stand for the price ( 10 at the time). The shiny gloss black finish was an excellent match for the PS3 and both the stand and the fan were a perfect fit. The fan seats properly, the USB cable is long enough, the variable speed fans aren't particularly noisy, the console is secure on the stand and the power switch being located on the front is ideal. Almost a year on and we've had no problems. I've just purchased another two of these stands & fans for use with the 80gb model PS3 (now cost 11). Unfortunately, it would appear that Sony have altered the design of the casing on the 80gb model (and possibly the 40gb model too). This means that the lugs at the front of the fan that are supposed to locate into ventilation holes on the top of the PS3 casing no longer line up and the fan will not seat correctly. In addition, the USB cable on the fan isn't long enough to reach the USB ports on the 40gb and 80gb models. The good news is that I simply contacted the supplier who happily exchanged the fan units for modified versions (relocated lugs and longer USB lead). These fit the 80gb model as well as the original fitted the 60gb model (although I still don't think the modified fan fits the 60gb model because of the position of the ventilation holes). Therefore, I can only say that based on my experience, I am really impressed with this product. I can see from other feedback that some people have had problems. Most seem to be that they have the wrong version of the fan for their model of PS3 and it doesn't fit correctly. Others seem to have had faulty fans. In both cases I'd suggest contacting the supplier. The unit is warrantied for a year and I found them to be very helpful. In the final analysis, this is a very reasonably priced accessory that not only enhances the appearance of your expensive games console, but provides a little extra peace of mind if you are worried about overheating.
A PS3 NEEDS A FAN October 27, 2008 M. Seaward (UK) After my PS3 broke down due to overheating, I decided I wasn't taking any chance with my replacement. The stand means that the power button is on the front of the PS3 meaning you can actually turn your PS3 off (that by itself greatly reduces the chances of your PS3 overheating). Being vertical, the PS3 does stay a lot cooler and combined with the extra fans, I;'ve noticed the PS3 does run smoother. By placing my hand over the fans I can feel the hot air rushing out....A few of my games, notably, BFBC did keep jamming. Since I've brought this product the game hasn't jammed once. So for all of you skeptics out there...Your PS3 can benefit from a fan. But note...theres no point buying unless you've got room to have it vertical...
Good for the money spent October 7, 2008 T. GREEN (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok, now I know some people here have only given this product a couple of stars and I can only assume this must be because they have the 40gb ps3 with two usb ports, mine however is the 60gb version and the fan cable fits fine, though I can see why people would have trouble fitting the fan unit cable to anything else. The fans themself work fine, was simple and easy to fit reasonable quiet and is very secure hopefully cooling the unit down further, extra cooling is always good with electronics even if not really needed. The stand fits fine is sturdy and the welcome addition of the power switch on the front which is lit with a blue light when on makes this product worth it for the stand alone. Both stand and fan unit are the same colour as the ps3 (not the colour in the pictures) and match the ps3 very well, all in all a very good product for a small amount of cash.
Good for some... September 29, 2008 Ian Munro (Scotland) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Just a little info on the product itself before i say any more on it. The picture on my display would leave you to believe that it is actually a sort of grey colour however it is gloss black to match the ps3. The fans are quiet and barely noticeable and do seem to turn enough that it would cool your ps3. The stand is rather handy, it has a power button at the front of the unit which has a blue LED under it, making the unit look that little bit better. The whole thing works simply by popping your ps3 into the stand, Clipping the fan to the top and connecting the usb cable, which is attached to the fan, into one of the free usb slots on the ps3...This is where it went wrong for me! The Usb cable does not reach either of the usb slots, rendering the whole thing useless. On discovering this i searched the web and found a few forums with people having the same issue. The fan unit is a old design, and subsequently made for the older versions of the ps3 ie 60gig and 20gig so my 40gig model was out of luck. So to sum this one up, do not buy this if you have a 40 gig version unless of course you have a usb hub which can be used with a extension or you just want the nice stand. Hope this helped. *NOTE* I wrote to Amazon about the lack of or misleading information given with this product so hopefully they will amend this.
It works... for a couple of weeks only!!! September 26, 2008 badoubade (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well the base is still there, but the fan!!! It stops after 2 weeks. It's cheap for a reason. It works fine but won't last. You've been warned
