Amazon.co.uk Review
For over a decade now fans have been wondering just what a team-up between Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog would be like. Everything from traditional platform games to complex role-playing titles have been suggested, but it's fair to say nobody imagined that it would finally happen in the form of an athletics simulator. It's officially licensed from the 2008 Beijing Olympics though (Sega already had the license for their own more traditional tie-in) and contains all the usual events you'd expect including the 100m sprint, swimming, judo, table tennis, hammer throwing and archery. Sega have even been talking about using the new Wii Zapper controller for a spot of clay pigeon shooting. More than twenty-five characters from both universes will be playable in the game, including not just Mario and Sonic but also Luigi, Tails, Yoshi, Knuckles, Bowser, Doctor Eggman, Princess Peach and Amy. Other characters will have cameos as judges such as Cream the Cat and Toad. You'd expect some characters to be naturally better at some sports than others but each has their own strengths and weakness, with even Sonic's incredible speed mitigated by his slow acceleration. The whole game is developed by Sega but overseen by legendary Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto, with full tournament and missions modes as well as online leaderboards for all the different events. The name may sound like an April Fool's joke at first but this crossover could well be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Harrison Dent

controls difficult? My four year old can do it! May 14, 2008 T. J. Smith (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent game. There is huge variety in the games; they are innovative and varied. The graphics are excellent as you would expect. More events unlock as you play the game more which increases its longevity. Some other reviews complain about the complexity of the controls. This surprises me as my children (aged four and seven) can both manage to play it very well. They have both successfully won several gold medals and broken many world records, so if they can manage it I should think anybody could (if they could be bothered to read the instructions which are presented before each event). Overall, it's an excellent game. As with many Wii games, it is definitely geared towards the younger gamer, and it hits this target market very well. Just be careful, it can be very exhausting! You'll need the stamina of an Olympian to keep up with the kids.
....... May 5, 2008 C. Lewis (UK) I have this game on DS and Wii, the graphics are better on wii but on the Ds it is easyer. With the wii you need the nunchuk alot and you hit yourself with it and you know about it ! lol. Very Good Game..x.
Interesting........ May 3, 2008 John Hood (Norn Iron) This game is a decent one but, i feel over-hyped. For example picking things on the menu it makes these peculiar sounds. Also i think the characters are a bit cheesy!! over all its a decent game but over priced...
No wonder there have been street protests about the olympics... April 29, 2008 Spuddy Spud (The Spuddery) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I honestly cannot understand why anyone enjoys this game. The hard times started right from the get-go before a starting pistol was even fired when the file creator screen would not allow me to enter my nickname (Spud) or any variation of it. It wouldn't even allow me to enter my real name. What on earth is this all about? I'm not connected to the web, so it's not even as if I'm duplicating someone else's gamer tag. It eventually allowed me to enter Spud with a diaresis over the u! After that, things went downhill. Using the controls is a very arcane science, since it's difficult to use the buttons with the accuracy required when you're frantically waving them up-and-down to get speed. Your hands slip, or mine did anyway, and flicking the remote to jump, etc., is a hit-and-miss affair becasue there is no on-screen indication to tell you whether you did it too hard or soft. You have to wait to get your rubbish results, and hope for the best on the next attempt. The games are all a bit too difficult, particularly for a game which is likely to appeal to youngsters, and waggling the controls around results in the wire linking the nunchuck to the remote to sommersault like a skipping rope. I tried playing it sitting down, and had a smack in the eye with the wire for my troubles. Play it standing up and the wire can become tangled around the controllers. When you switch from a twin-control to a single control game or vice versa, it keeps annoyingly asking you to disconnent or re-attach the nunchuck, even when the nunchuck would not get in the way, like on the skeet shooting game. I can't imagine all this does the controllers much good. You have to go through the tiresome rigmarole of about three button presses when you want to replay any event, and in any case once you've succeded in an event there's little incentive to play again anyway, because the games are all pretty dull. On the plus side, the graphics and sound are quite nice, but presentation counts for little when the games are not much good. I for one will be trading this game in at the soonest opportunity - I don't think any alternative could be much worse.
Got to have it!!! April 27, 2008 C. Burgess (Essex) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great game and got me into Olympics alot more. Now I want to see every event in the games!! Anyway, back to the game...Haven't played Circuits or Missions yet, but have played Single Match mode, which is the normal playing mode. Brilliant graphics - clear and bright. Instructions on how to use the wii remote or wii remote and nunchuk are very clear. A wide variety of games on there, but there's a twist - a good one! When you get an extra good score on a game, you unlock a new Circuit and a new game in Single Match mode. This basically gets you more things to do on the game. Discovered this game from a freind and we were on it all night!!! Lots of Mario and Sonic characters to choose from for each event. The characters are separated into these catagories: Power Type, All-Around, Skill Type and Speed Type. Try out different characters for each event, see which one works best for you. I've found that Daisy is best for swimming, Sonic is best for running, Peach is best for High Jump, Bowser is best for Hammer Throw, Blaze is best for Trampolining and Mario is best for the Dream Race. I've still yet to uncover the rest!!! SUMMARY I'd reccomed thoroughly that you get this game. It's fun for the whole family and it keeps you extra fit. Thank you for reading this review. I hope it had been useful to you.
