The ways of the ninja aren't something that the majority of us are familiar with. Yet Tecmo's new action-adventure Ninja Gaiden offers a fairly rigorous schooling. We'll forgive it that, though, because it's all in the name of one of the Xbox's finest, most enjoyable games. From the off, it drips with detail. Viewed from the third person, it creates a completely realistic 3-D environment for you to explore, and it pushes you along with an old-fashioned narrative of vengeance and retrieval. It's all an excuse of course to put you in the shoes of a ninja, with a big sword to boot. And heck, how you'll use it. That's because as you explore the game world, you'll find yourself continually having to fight off the numerous enemies that are in the way of your task. This is where the game really hits top gear. The fighting engine is outstanding, and few games pull off the marriage of intuitive controls, breathless action and variety of moves that Ninja Gaiden has. If you've ever found yourself complaining that gameplay often gets pushed too far down the priorities list for developers, then Ninja Gaiden is not just a welcome breath of fresh air, it's set to take pride of place in your gaming collection. One word of caution though before you sign up for the mission: this is a hard game--make no bones about it. Chances are you'll spend much of the first hour cursing yourself, as this is a game that requires skill from the off, and decent quantities of it. Random button pushers will not feel at home. Of course, in the long term, it's all the better for being so challenging, and crucially, it's entirely fair. When you die, it's simply because you're not good enough. It might be harsh, but you can hardly complain. With plenty to explore, upgrades to acquire and a very long lasting challenge, though, Ninja Gaiden deserves to shoot straight up the wanted list of the Xbox gamer. 36 hours. That's how long it took me to beat Ninja Gaiden Black on normal mode. Considering that I spent alittle under a round of drinks in the pub for it makes it value for money and easily crowns the game the best game I own on the 360. I've played gears of war and lost planet both to completion along with the Halo series but this is the game that draws me back for more.In short this is single player heaven.
Buy this game and relish every moment.

Ive finally completed the game on normal mode after over a year of trying.During this time Ive almost wept tears of frustration(i.e Ive just defeated an uber difficult boss after several attempts but before I have a chance to save I get killed by some minions and have to fight the boss all over again). Many times I put the game away vowing never to touch it again but theres something about it that just keeps u coming back for more. Perhaps its the crisp,detailed graphics which wont look out of place on the xbox 360,or the intuitive and responsive contols which transforms your character into the ultimate killing machine? Whatever it is it had me hooked until the end credits rolled and Ive been unable to find another game to match it since. I tried Onimusha 3 but the controls felt so wooden and stiff in comparison.Bottom line is if u own an xbox or even a 360 u need this game for your collection. its pure gaming pleasure with a hefty dose of pain but in the end its soooooooo worth it.

true the game isnt that hard and every1s always saying how easy it is but damn u have to admit its does get harder thruout the game and it is a stunning game one of the best graphics i have seen in a xbox game eva its one of my favourite games i have played as it does give u some challenge also some new gamers who rnt sure about gettin it if they think its 2 hard just 2 let u no buy it ur b suprised how good u cood b at game its got easy controls This is defo a must have game 4 any xbox fan

Ninja Gaiden has a badass reputation, being the hardest game ever, and for a long time this put me of getting it. Psyched up and ready for the worst, I saved my potions and braved the first boss. I beat him on the first evening, got to level 4 on the second night. I'm not some gaming guru, Ninja Gaiden isn't that hard.
The combat is superb. Jump into a group of eight ninjas, block, block, roll, cut, cut, kick, finish and come out clean. You will feel very formidable, very quickly. Concerntrate, and you'll be fine just remember that this game punishes predictable play.
It's pretty and the music's nice. But the puzzles are not the best and the exploration is a bit iffy. The village and town levels are the least successful with invisible walls and doors that can't be opened. It would of been a better game if it focussed on set pieces purely.
Why five starts then? Because the combat is so profoundly satisfying, it's like a martial arts version of Halo.
Truly superb.

I feel pround of myself as I write. Why? I managed to finish Ninja Gaiden, even if it was only on normel. This game is the height of my beloved hobby. The graphics were the best around when the game came out, and somehow only blockbusters like Oblivion have topped it since. If you want to see how good they are, then look at Ryu's eyes in any of the cutscenes. Somehow they have captured the shine that eyes give off. The music is fantastic too. Go into settings and listen to "Alma Awakened," it is some of the best music ever. The story is also nice. It's interesting, and keeps your attention. It also has some unexpected twists. The actual gameplay though is where the beauty of this game lies. Well, you get to be a Ninja, how cool is that? You basically run around using various weapons, both melee and projectile, and you kill things. There are plenty of moves available to all weapons, some easy to master, some tough. The ability to use walls and the environment in general to jump and hop around is simply superb, and you'll enjoy hours of your life trying to backflip from one wall to another just to spin around and land back where you started. Magic in motion. The camera is a bit annoying, but since you can pulll the right trigger at any time to re-centre it, you'll get use to it. Basically it's sheer pleasure. However, the only niggle is the infamous difficulty. Even on the easiest level, this is a tough challenge. Even the first boss is going to be tough at first. However, you will soon get to the stage where Murrai and his nunchucks prove to be no trouuble (at least on normel). From there it's just perseverance and maybe a little luck. After a lot of cursing and shouting, you'll finish it. If you want something a bit easier though, go for Ninja Gaiden: Black. Anywho, that's enough from me, if you've been patient enough to read all this, then here's my recomendation. Unless you're not a serious gamer, then you really must get this. In the words of the Halo 2 voice-over: UNFREAKINBELIEVEABLE!
