Bought it, tried it, binned it! November 24, 2008 John Walker (Scotland) Couldn't wait for this to arrive, as I thought MSTS had just about had it. I downloaded it for 39.99 in December 2007 (yes really) and installed it on my brand new state of the art dual core PC. I was impressed with the nice little patches of greenery which swayed in the wind, but couldn't get excited about much else. The diesel cabs were basic in the extreme and the game ran so slowly on my fairly high spec PC that the locos appeared to be running with the brakes still partially applied. Judder was worse than on MSTS, and frequent lock-ups were the norm. The freight activities require manual point setting, providing you can work out which siding is which. Changing views from one to another took about as long as changing a lightbulb in the dark. I persevered with it for a couple of months when it became apparent that all it was doing was taking up valuable space on my hard drive. I am still using MSTS, as the very latest developed routes are light years away from those originally supplied with the sim. To summarise, one year after its release, it is available at less one third of its original price. That should say it all. I deleted it from my hard drive without even making a copy, and I shall never again buy a train sim until it has had the chance to be crucified by cynics like me. No doubt, many of you will have had some enjoyment from Rail Simulator. I enjoyed watching it exit my recycle bin best of all!!
WHY? September 20, 2008 Peter West (Surrey UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Over a period of time I have kept putting it off and putting it off but, eventually and with some trepidation(see some of the other reviews)I finally bought the Rail Simulator. I wish I hadn't! The manual was anything but helpful, the game(?)was appalling, the sounds dreadful. It was almost impossible to find advice and guidance and in the 3.8 GB of space it takes up the makers could have done much, much better. Then to play the game one has to keep the disc in all the time one is playing!. That is a definite no-no. So, when my patience was exhausted yet another real hurt came when I was trying to uninstall - it takes nearly an hour!! What a total waste of money. I have bought far more superior rail simulation games for under a fiver elsewhere.
NOT what you are probably expecting.. September 11, 2008 tiptoptrainer (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Which in my case, was a 'driveable' simulator - but also, more importantly, something with which I could create my own 'virtual railway; - almost like a lifelike online trainset. The demo seemed very promising... however sadly the purchased version falls very, very short of what I had expected... Firstly, the interface in extrememly clunky and not at all intuitive. The 'tools' are poorly organised and ridiculously difficult to use. I was expecting something along the lines of the early Rollercoaster Tycoon or the excellent Railroad Tycoon series, but this is not even on the same planet! Unless you're an unemployed or retired computer expert you'll soon run out of patience. The tools stick constantly, buildings and objects are unbelievably difficult to position and align, views jump and lurch regularly and the program suffers from frequent crashes, (I run a quad drive pc with over 500gb hd & 4mb ram). To cap it all, the 'manual' is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. Online 'help' is also almost non-existent, apart from a few basic instructional videos (where everything amazingly works perfectly), and a forum seemingly populated entirely by; well, no-one actually. Ultimately, you get the feeling that somewhere a bunch of geeks have got together and spent a long long time creating a dreadful product from a great idea. Now, if only someone like the creator of Railroad Tycoon could get hold of it and do it properly... In summary, AVOID at all costs - you WILL be disappointed.

The controls are easy and the graphics are cool but there are not a lot of steam trains. There are a lot of diesels and less steam engine. It is not easy to make your own set. The set which are already made are good.
Get's better with age July 27, 2008 Charles Burton (Farnham, Surrey United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Brilliant experience - especially the free roam facility. A lot of on line help available when registered with the web site. A note to get the best out of this simulator,Good speakers (Logitech,Creative 5:1 set up at least),a Sound Blaster Extreme Audio Card and a PHYS X graphics hardware is essential. Also make sure that you have the most recent patches installed (MK 2 patch due out soon). All the official simulator add-ons are worth while. If you like train spotting, this will take you back to the days when the HST 125 trains ruled supreme on the York - Newcaste route. Although the Instructions are minimal in paper form, explore the ONline forum for further helpful tips - including the links to UTube The best part of the game for me is in free roam, driving an HST out of Reading towards Paddington; just watch, listen and enjoy the sensation of opening up the throttle past the first 125mph speed restriction sign. Incredibly I reached 136mph! - without derailing it! Fantastic!
