Brilliant! August 8, 2008 M. A. Sutton-Croft I have just completed this game and felt compelled to write this review because I thought it was simply ACE! Very fun to play. Intuitive controls. Good online play. Plus, something that hasn't been mentioned much and I wasn't expecting, it's HILARIOUS too! Was chortling through much of the gameplay. Most fun I've had on a game in a while. BUY IT NOW!
One of the the most overlooked games June 10, 2008 J. Atkinson (Surrey, UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The problem is originality often doesn't go down well. Bw2 is an original type of game, as is zack and wiki. These are both games that maybe you might not have heard of, but let me assure you they are both great. Bw2 is a brilliant example of 3rd person shooters, and whilst it claims to be a strategy game, i ofnd there is verey little strategy involved, which just makes it that much better, would highly recommend piking it up 2nd hand, 16 pounds is a bargain for such a fantastic game!
a decent enough stop-gap April 20, 2008 R. J. Cooke (oxford) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Perhaps more than any other Nintendo game, BWii shows both the weakness and strength of the big white one's gaming agenda. Filled with charming art design and simple adaptable controls BWii should ride up there with the likes of Metroid and Mario. However, bouyed by Official Nintendo's 90% score I have to say I'm mostly underwhlemed, but certainly don't regret paying for it. Marketed (and subsequntly trumpted by ONM) as a strategy game, I cant help but feel disappointed. Never getting near its handheld cousin Advance Wars, BWii plays out more like a charming, bright third person blaster and this is both its greatest strength and weakness. The single player campaign is indeed fun. You can try out a variety of troops, vehicles (land, sea and air based), destroy buildings and cause cutesy carnage on the opposition, all with a control scheme slightly better than that of a traditional console because of the wii-pointer. The problem is that its not really challenging. Keeping the 'paper-scissor-stone' structure of Advance wars (where each unit has a strength and vulnerability) you lead your troops across a variety of terrains, destroying all in your path. However while the nintendo website convincves you that you have control for a whole battlefield, the opposite is true. It might tell you that you can call in air strikes or heavy artillery, but in reality all you do is make sure your troops survive the linear route plotted on your map. If you make it to the airport (mind you you can't g anywhere else), you get planes. The reason you get planes is because there is artillery ahead that will destroy your troops. No tactical acumen of any sort is required as your hand is held like this throughout the game. Thats not to say the action isn't fun, its just that its in fact the exact opposite of a strategy game. All that is required is to pick the right troop on the command structure for whatever the next enemy is that hurtles kamikaze-like toward your line. In this way it is no different to the FPS on other consoles. But as a full blown release its hard not to give Kuju some brownie points. The game feels fully thought out, the graphics are clean and the artsyle developed. It also features the best rendered cut scenes seen ont he wii so far. So, if you're stuck waiting for Smash brothers, then BWii is a decent enough stop-gap, just don't ecpect much depth as almost no developer has managed this yet on the wii.
Battalion wars 2-a brilliant and fun game! March 24, 2008 Mrs. C. A. Lizzimore 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Battalion wars 2 is a strategy/ third person shooter genre and gets a lot less credit than it deserves. There are many different units you can control across 6 unique civilisations. The civilizations are all cheeky replicas of real countries, including the british, russians, americans, japanese and germans. All the units are very easy to control and fun to use across the campaign and online. U'll be fighting and using grunts, mortars, flamethrowers, bazookas, tanks, AA vechiles, subs. bombers fighters and all the like. Utilise every unit to your advantage and your s-ranks will start rolling in quickly. Campaign 4/5: it'll last you a long while. Each level is particuarly short at about 10-15 mins long each but there are many levels for each civilisation. You don't have to work that strategically to win to begin with and it eases you in nicely. When you reach the last two campaigns however you need to start getting strategic and work hard to earn your way past those battles. Slightly short but excellent for the budding single player wii user. Online 5/5: its not what i was expecting. You can't just choose a map, a side, a game type and score limit. There are many different pre-set levels across 3 game modes. Co-op, assault and skirmish. In co-op you work with someone to achieve common goals, in skirmish its a standard fight as you battle to control areas and facilities, in assault you have to defend or attack a enemy hq. Not all misssions will be open to you staright away. You will have to play the levels you've unlocked already to unlock new levels which gives a sense of purpose online. All in all a fantastic online game and good for single players too!
War is fun again with Nintendo! March 19, 2008 J. N. Chauhan (London, England) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This game is amazingly well made. Firstly the visuals really stand out and look fanstastic. The art style is well polished and well textured with great looking character models and scenery. A good selection of colours are on display and really compliment each other. The story in the game is well written, as you play on a variety of sides each with their own battles that interlink. The nations in the game are representiative of the major powers in the world today and each given a hilarious character. The game plays like a dream with the wii remote completely enhancing the gameplay. It's very simple to point and shoot at enemies. However there are times when it can get a bit hectic where you lose yourself but on these times are extremely rare. There are some good motion sensing implementations, like flicking the nunchuck to jump and twisting the wiimote to turn the fighter jets. Speaking of fighter jets, those are accompanied by frigates, subs, light/heavy tanks etc. bascially wide array of units. The campaign mode is slighlty shorter than i would have liked but striving to get A or S grades on every mission will take some well earned time, (the game rewards you with bonus content for this). Then of course the online, amazing. Difficult to get into first, and you will lose the first few times as you get to learn the online maps. the online keeps the replayability of this game going for a long time to come. There are the dreaded friend code system again but there is also a match up syatem with random people, which works well. There is also a co op mode for those who haven't honed their skills yet, although the lack of voice/text communication does hinder the enjoyment of this mode. I haven't experienced any lag in my games as of yet, but of course it will depend on speed of your interent connection. Overall this definately improves on the first one on the gamecube. This is practically a must buy for wii owners (the only exception is if you really hate war games, but even then again you really must try this). This game is absolutely great in the first player and excels in the online component. This really is a must buy.
