Amazon.co.uk Review SquareSoft has always had a sure-fire hit when releasing any of their Final Fantasy titles, and Final Fantasy VIII should be no exception. The basis of a good RPG (role-playing game) has always been the story; spectacular graphics are secondary. Final Fantasy VIII's involved and interesting storyline is filled with great twists, well-developed characters, suspense, and romance. As an added bonus, the graphics are beautiful. Everything--from the low-lit jazz club to the steam-filled railroad tunnels--is gorgeous and perfectly sets the mood and tone of a scene. The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience. The epic storyline spans four discs--over 40 hours of gameplay--and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president. You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait. You can't buy a much better game. --John Cocking Pros: - A story to beat all stories
- Characters worth caring about
- Hey--it's from SquareSoft
- Stunning animations
Cons: - Too many random battles
- Combat is, as always, turn-based and offers minimal excitement
- Weak souls might give up after two or three discs of play

for that price? October 14, 2008 F. MORANGE (bradford uk) finanl fantasy 8 is quite a good rpg now it s far from perfect it run on playstation one so we cannot call it the latest game and to sell it 50 kwid when i got mine for seven 8 years ago and probably not even new if that not a rip off in the name of a pseudo collection or because it s a classic i m sure you ll get better game and value with final fantasy 10 it got voice and is far better final fantasy 8 got no voice no proper pause at that time there was legend of dragoon ,arc the lad 3 and chrono cross which is far better with voices and interesting gameplay but if you play rpg for the animation off the game well fina fantasy 8 is still one of the best but don t spend 50
Better than FF7 September 5, 2008 M. Cook (Doncaster) This is the first Final Fantasy i ever played. The cinematic graphics appealed to me, just to complete a scene to see another stunning (at the time) graphics work! the intro itself is enough to draw you in and question whats this game about? Long as game, but well worth it, to get to level 100 without cheats to beat the final boss. so wicked awesome!
OMG BEST GAME EVER!!! June 8, 2008 Jakz (United Kingdom) I Have Played Every Final Fantasy In Excistence on Every Console And This One Beats Everything!!! The Story Line Is Fantastic And Touching On How He Is Kinda A Loner AT The Beggining TO Being Quite Popular And Loved, The Only Downside Of It Is The Random Battles And The Battle System..But For My Opinion You Don't Even Notice!! Some People Reccommend FF 9 But This One Beats Them All!! If You Buy This Game Then Good Choice!
wow April 10, 2008 G. R. Owens (UK) i borrowed this game off a mate as i wanted to try ff, he said ff7 was the best but was buissy playing it, so i settled for 8, the best second choice i ever made!!! i actualy went out and bought a playstation to play the dam thing,(was playing on my brothers but wasnt enough time between the two of us), for the next few days i played the game straight for 4 days! even missed some things i should have gone to just to play it, that was about 4ish years ago and ive still got cravings to play it again, ive tried other ff's but NONE match it
A good game, shame about the story. March 30, 2008 Andrew Gray (Edinburgh) I am a big fan of Final Fantasy games. I own most of them. I liked most of the new ideas in this one, such as the junction and draw systems and the vastly improved graphics. The battle system, although hardly original, worked well. The main (if only) drawback was the story... complete crap. The ideas for character names did not impress me. Ultimecia is a step too far. They might as well of called her Mrs Evil. The music was also not fantastic. When it stands next to FFVII or FFX it just cannot compare. I think that this game has only really been judged this harshly because it was the follow up to FFVII. It must have been a really hard act to follow.
