Soul Calibur III, Well what can I say... It's Good (that's an undersatment) It's Amazing (that's an understatment) It's the best ps2 game (not including wrestling games) I've ever played/experienced. Rapheal is Fantastic with The Queen's Guard Sword!!! 5Stars!!!! (that's an understatment)

The first difference between this and Tekken is weapons. This was the only difference to beign with but in the end this has come out on top.
Firstly is the amazingly good character creator system which may not be as detailed as other games (Tony Hawk games are quite accurate) it still feels really satisfying to watch your creation slice up classics like Voldo and Mitsurugi. Nice and simple.
The modes here are very varied for those who have time and for those who just want quick relief. For those who really want depth there is the long Chronicles of the Sword mode whic involves basic strategy with the same beat em up power on the real game. It also has a nice little story in it and although the strategy system isn't revolutionary it is enough to keep you entertained. Anoter mode is the Tales of the Souls, which is like the arcade mode but what you choose affects who you fight against; however after you've played it a few times you'll realise that everyone's story is very similar and the only thing seperating them is the ending. The other mode is Arena mode which is basically a random choice of very random modes (fighting a giant statue!?) that are used for quick relief and addictive gameplay which is what they do best.
The characters in this series is literally the entire set. Although there aren't many ? squares in the selection process there is a small area where they've shoved random old characters (does anyone remember Li Long and Hwang?) along with some random other characters. One of the biggest selections so far.
Overall...buy it if you have a craving for a good beat em up. If you don't like it then you don't like beat em ups so that's not my problem; everyone else is welcome though.

I have never played any soul calibur Games before, I bought this one and was amazed and addicted to it:
It has a really cool Character creation mode were you can buy armor and stuff and create your original character and use them in some modes, you can also choose the weapons and job your character has.
The Graphics are really good, I'm very impressed, this game wasn't rushed like some stuff.
Lots of features to keep you amused for hours.
If the Game has a fault, my friend who had Soul Calibur 2 says the some custom Characters really good moves have been changed. But I don't think this matters too much as the other features on the game make up for this. 9.5/10

Ignore the other reviews, they are pathetic. Cartoon graphics? Those graphics are more realistic than any other game, the create-a-character mode is fantastic!
Sure they look 'generic', but what else are they going to do? If you made the characters look like main characters, it might ruin it. There are more weapons than ever before, better characters, and better modes. The strategy mode is cool, and enables you to actually use your brain properly in a fighting game. This is one of the best fighting games ever, it beats even Tekken!

I can't believe I haven't written a review for this game sooner. I've had it since it first came out and I love it. All the modes are engaging and enjoyable and it seems there is a character for any type of person (altho' in my opinion there are about three or four characters that are just plain rubbish... but that's always the way). It moves on well from Soul Calibur 2 and it looks great. The character creation is fun in itself but it does take a while to get your own characters to look as good as the main ones. It really amazed me and also gave me hope for future instalments (especially if the customised elements get improved upon).
Now, I'm writting this review after having written one for Tekken 5 and I feel inclined to throw my two pence into the "which is better" debate. I love the Tekken series when I first played it, but the last few in the series have been let downs. The major point in this debate is that Tekken fans will claim Soul Calibur is nothing but a button mashers paradise. This is rubbish, Tekken has always had the button mashing element as well. Tekken fans will also say that Soul Calibur requires no skill. Again, rubbish. In my opinion it takes more skill, but it's more accessable and the learning curve is better. Meaning, that yes you can button mash and do well when you start playing but as you learn the mechanics of the game you can perform the wide variety of moves available and do even better in the game. The game has a faster pace (I read one review that said Tekken has a fast pace... if you increase the difficulty... Soul Calibur is face paced on any difficulty, so you decide which is better). There is a lot the Tekken franchise could take from Soul Calibur like a more intuitive defensive play and being able to easily side step an opponent or roll out of the way. Soul Calibur is a real 3D fighting game. The actual fights in Soul Calibur are much more pleasing to the eyes as well.
Really, tho', I don't think there is much place for a debate, it ends up being a personal choice. All the arguements presented are somewhat empty and I've only mentioned why my affections have switched from Tekken to Soul Calibur.
