1 out of 5 stars Poor product support/customer care   October 11, 2005

Avoid this product and seriously consider before buying anything from these guys! I bought Ski Racing 2005 a few months ago for my son and it worked fine but then it suddenly stopped working (it would not start), and despite following the instructions on the company's FAQ section on their website it still did not work. When I contacted the company they were not interested in helping me and provided a very short and arrogant reply to my email asking for help. When I contacted them again to ask for help, they simply did not reply. This game is called Ski Racing 2005 and as it is still only October 2005 I would expect that it would not become obsolete so quickly because of, for example, security patches. Very poor -- I'm giving 1 star because the system won't let me give a 0 or -ve rating.

4 out of 5 stars At last, a proper skiiing game   April 7, 2005

At last, a proper skiiing game for the PC (and other platforms too). It's not perfect, but it is a big step in the right direction.

Rather than the usual trick snowboarding games that winter sports fans have had to put up with, this is a proper, medium weight simulation of alpine skiiing. All the disciplines are represented - slalom, giant slalom, super giant and downhill - and (most impressively) all the hills from the 2004-5 season are here, in realistic detail. No doubt for licensing reasons, the only real skier's name you will see is Hermann Maier, but the other names are thinly disguised real skiers (Bode Muller for example), which works reasonably well. The graphics are bright and crisp and create a very good sensation of speed, and the various courses have their particular characteristics well represented. The controls are simple (this is no advanced simulation of the technical niceties of skiiing), but they are intuitive and give a fair feel for the nature of the sport.

Not that there aren't some drawbacks. For a start, this is men only - no women skiers or races. Also, instead of playing a realistic season, taking each race as it comes, you can at first only ski the first four events, until you have unlocked the next stage by scoring enough points. So you will be skiiing the same races over and over as you slowly improve your rankings. It would have been much batter to be able to ski through a full season, however badly you do. There is also a skill points feature, which means that your times get quicker the more you play - which seems like a good idea, as it means that you are constantly rewarded by new records, but it also takes away much of the satisfaction of getting a good time, since you know it is due to your improved ratings, rather than your skill as a player. Also the very simplicity of the action means that a lot of factors, such as ski waxing, course condition and weather effects (other than visual effects), are not present.

All that said, this is still a creditable effort, and good fun to fire up for a quick zoom down the slopes. Hopefully there will be a 2006 edition, to improve on this good beginning.
