Amazon.co.uk Preview
Purposefully held over to take full advantage of next generation PC graphics cards and the new consoles, this latest sequel in the Unreal Tournament series is looking to set new standards for multiplayer first person shoot `em-ups. Considering developer Epic Games' Unreal graphics technology is used by so many other companies you always know a new Unreal Tournament game is going to look good. There's tons of new features beyond just eye candy here though, including a whole new game mode called Warfare, which works like a combination of the existing Assault and Onslaught modes, with more involved mission goals that make team play absolutely essential to success.

As you'd expect there's a hanger full of new vehicles and weapons including some nifty hoverboards for when you're just on-foot and a number of new robot mechs for you to drive; all with varying numbers of legs including tripods and four-legged walkers. The enormous Leviathan tank is particularly impressive, with four independently manned turrets and a giant energy weapon.

Considerable work has also gone into providing the game with a decent single player mode, never one of the series' highlights, with newly improved artificial intelligence that allows you to simulate a multiplayer game properly even when you're playing on your own. User created modifications (mods) will also continue to play a hugely important part in the game's success with the game shipping with a new version of the Unreal Editor for both PCs and consoles. After a quiet 2006, it seems like 2007 is going to be the best year ever for PC gamers.

1 out of 5 stars Do you feel lucky   October 30, 2008

Love the graphics, love the gameplay from previous version but don't like the fact that 1min into every game the sound freezes and the screen goes black. My PC is significantly above spec (1Gb graphics card, 4x3Ghz CPU etc) but this isn't restricted to just me - google it if you want proof.

Graphics card drivers patches have made no difference throughout the year, nor have the 3 updates provided by Epic (none appear to address the crashes).

Recommended if your hardware is compatible, but waste of money if not.

Can anyone recommend a similar FPS I can play instead?

This game differs a lot from it's predecessors. As an example, a lot of the game modes from the previous Unreal Tournaments have been simply thrown out which spoils the fun a bit in my opinion. Cutting out game modes like Invasion really dissapointed me when I first ran the game. That being said, the introduction of a different plot made me interested at first. After time though, the fun seemed to wash away as playing the same games on slighty different maps killing the same people over and over gets a little repetitive. Sure. it's great fun for one-offs like if you're bored and looking to kill half an hour but I can't recommend it for constant playing. What happened to Invasion? Sheesh.

Having followed the Unreal Tournament series right up until now I have been blown away at the sheer scale of mass destruction and death that trademarks these games.

This latest instalment has been yet another success. Never before have I actually considered the fact that the PC may actually be capable of realistic graphics, having been an extreme Xbox 360 gamer for a good year an a half until a few weeks ago when I made that big push and bought a 2,000 PC to run the latest games. This game came with the PC and I can say it was worth every penny just to play this game.

The graphics are beyond what I expected. I made a comparison between this and Call of Duty 4 (the leading game in `realistic graphics'). I got my mate to play CoD 4 (Xbox 360 version) on a TV next to my PC monitor while I played Unreal Tournament III at its highest setting. We both decided that UT III looks better by a long shot, even believing the gameplay to be more engaging than CoD 4.

I can't say a lot more without repeating what the other reviewers have already said, but I thought the graphical capability of this game should be clearly stated. I have a system where I compare graphics to real life and base it on a percentage. This theory works by analysing human faces and texture quality. I rate this game as having a 62% Realism Factor, which is the most I have given a game in a long time. Call of Duty 4 earned a respectable 54%.

This was the first UT game I've played, so I can't really compare it to other games in the series. However, I've been extremely happy with it.

First of all, the graphics are amazing. Not as good as Crysis (obviously), but they are great. Unfortunately, you'll need a good computer to run them at full capacity, and I don't have one. I'm currently on the in-between setting, and it's quality is about the same as Halo 2, which is pretty good. I did however try to run it at 5, and through the slowness of my PC, I noticed it's better than a lot of console games, notably the PS3 version of this game, which is disappointing for the PS3, since it has so much potential. I have yet to see the 360 version though, and I ordered it and am currently waiting.

The multiplayer is one of the best I've ever played. It's frantic, fast-paced action, so if you're an adrenaline junkie (and video game addict, hehe) then this is perfect for you. But of course, this has its problems. You may find you die every 20 seconds. It's kill or be killed. You'll need lightning-fast reactions, because some of these people, are, shall I say, UNREAL?! Sorry. I couldn't resist. Apparently they removed some gametypes, but honestly, I'm happy with the selection.

The story is sort of weird. I know this is bad, but I haven't finished it yet. Sorry. From what I understand, there are aliens and you have to blow stuff up. Yeah. But that's not the weird part; you fight the aliens in a tournament-based war, with capture the flag and deathmatch style objectives... but you're not playing this game for the story, and that's what the developers knew.

This is a great game, I recommend it for FPS fans or people with a lot of energy. But be warned; if you're too slow, you'll die. Again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Speedy, action packed matches, back to the old school.   July 4, 2008

Finally, a shooter that sticks to its roots.

Who needs hardcore, hashed-up, quasi story themed FPS' when you have something as intense and fun-filled and at the same time - glistening with current technology models, lighting and physics.
Yummy.

Ok... so the menu system is terrible... the options a bit limited... but overall, hey, it's a great game.

And for a tenner...?!
