Good but has it's faults. March 18, 2008 M Oliver (UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is an enjoyable, story driven wargame, it does, however, have it's problems and I'd like to highlight these first. 1. The initially released game is a bit buggy, but this was resolved by downloading the latest +300Mb patch. So apart from the normal moan about publishers releasing games before they are properly polished not a problem. 2. The 2 campaigns are a bit short, not yet tried the multiplayer. 3. There's a lot of loading time between scenarios. But now to the good things: 1. A comptetent battle simulator, it reminded me of a spruced up 'Dark Omen', which is good. The simulator is not as good as the total war games but very enjoyable. 2. The warhammer setting, you know exactly what you are getting. 3. The campaigns, although short, build up nicely to a crescendo, I especially liked the Empire campaign. I finished the game feeling very good about it. Overall, a worthy successor to the ancient 'Shadow of the Hornet Rat' and 'Dark Omen' games. Looking forward to the expansion, 'Battle March', out in May'08
Disapointing January 22, 2008 Alex Albutt (England) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I first heard of this game and thought "great! Warhammer, Total War style!" in a White Dwarf magazine. I waited so long for it to come out and eventually when it did come out, I was quite annoyed. The campaign system is very restrictive, playing a single player battle took me about a day to work out where it was (this may have just been me being dumb), it is rather laggy, and at the time of it's release I had a dual core 2.2ghz processor, 2gb RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 7600GT and finally the AI is extremely basic in terms of tactics but also linearity. All entrances, exits and "random events" are actually scripted so you can just quit and start again if you fial to do something. Very dissapointing all round although it did have one redeeming feature: you couldn't play as Dwarves. :P
Straight in the bin November 16, 2007 blackbour 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
Bought it, installed it, played 30 minutes, straight in the bin. Linear arcade lobotomy toejam. Not a patch on warhammer 40k or company of heroes.
Short and under developed... October 11, 2007 Koncorde (St. Helens, UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Lets not get away from the good points here - it's challenging, it's different and it covers a broad scope of the Warhammer world to wet the appetite of most gamers. Multiplayer is fun, and the ability to customise and play around with your 'army' is without a doubt one of the best things done in a game in many a year. Unfortunately the single player campaign seemingly goes nowhere fast, and indeed is more limited than ye olde Mark of Chaos game. I'm not sure how they managed it, but they took a 10 year old game - gave it a dress up (and even stole one of the missions clean out of the original) - then treated it like a mushroom. You can tell more effort has been put into the 40k games, and that's a great pity - because here Games Workshop has a world you could joyfully fit a Dark Crusade scale game into. Instead of variety - you're bottle necked - instead of giant 4000 man armies (a la Rome Total War) you might command 500. Instead of really technical combat involving feints and draws, you've got a lot of standing and shooting (particularly given the fact you comand either an Elven force notorious for that tactic, or an Empire force kitted out with firepower). Still - the groundwork has been laid, and with just a little love and attention this engine could produce some truly superb expansions and developments.
Let's just straighten a few things out, here. May 29, 2007 Sheb (Suffolk, UK) 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
Right - first of all, if this game doesn't run on your pc, there is generally a reason for that. Don't blame your game, check your pc out. Secondly, stop comparing this to Total War. It isn't. It's more like Dark Omen and The Shadow of the Horned Rat from ages ago. If you must compare it to another game, compare it to it's predecessor. Now that's all sorted out - this game is very good, very distracting, and lots of fun. Downside - it does seem linear, and it does seem a little simple. Also, I would have preferred clear instructions as to how to have a one off skirmish and paint my army up. but, I expect I'll find it somewhere. If you fancy thumping someone's head in without resource management or base building, you could do far worse than this game. A worthy addition to any RTS / GW enthusiast's collection.
