In a nutshell:
Her name’s Dark, Jo Dark. And this is the story of how England’s female super agent became who she is, from humble beginnings as gun-for-hire to premier league spy. When a straightforward corporate snatch mission leads to a global conspiracy, Joanna Dark and her father get sucked into a world conflict invisible to the public setting Jo on her path to becoming a Perfect Agent.

The lowdown:
Yes, you’ll get to shoot a lot of bad guys with weapons ranging from good old sniper rifles to silenced weapons to the RCP-90, nostalgic automatic weapon of choice for fans of Nintendo 64 classic Goldeneye, also from British developer Rare. Although the graphics aren’t looking as impressive as some other Xbox 360 launch titles, you have to try it to appreciate its subtlety – Perfect Dark feels great to play.

Most exciting moment:
Co-operative modes are becoming increasingly commonplace, but Perfect Dark takes things to the next level by introducing a new character and often wholly separate paths through the game’s intricately constructed maps.

Since you ask:
After creating masterpieces from Goldeneye to platform game legend Banjo Kazooie in partnership with Nintendo, developer Rare was snapped up by Microsoft to work exclusively on Xbox.

The bottom line:
Shaping up to be the shining star of Xbox 360’s launch line-up.
Nick Gillett

Not impressed with the line: "Excuse me, I think I dropped something! My jaw!! (She was a computer character and couldn't understand) The aliens abandoned genocide. They were terrified of Joanna's magic torch
X-ray vision failed to live up to adolescent fantasies The infinitely more saucy "Ready Brek" vision

1 out of 5 stars poor poor shoddy game   March 26, 2008

This game is abysmal. I bought it because at the time (this was before Halo 3) I was looking for a multiplayer (single console) first person shooter and this seemed to be the only option...

The multiplayer is shoddy, there is no fun to it... or skill for that matter, it becomes obvious within the first seconds of turning this game on that the developers at Rare that produced Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64 are long gone, both the previous games were and still are fun and great to play... This however is not, its boring, uninvolving and frankly a bit of a mess, it looks and feels like a beta version before a games tester has come anywhere near it, if I had tested this game I would have beeged and pleaded Rare not to release this.

A good single player game in my opinion is one that pulls you in and makes you play for hours when you thought you would just play for 5 minutes, there are now many examples of geat single player games on this console, Assassins Creed, Halo 3, Crackdown, Dead Rising... even Kameo completely walks all over this abysmal mess of a game. I don't care about Joanna Dark in fact when she dies in the game I feel like laughing, I try playing the missions and after the first minute I wish that I hadn't bothered the only reason I go on to complete the missions is so I can take the disc out and put in anything... ANYTHING else. There may be many different aspects to the missions, but frankly that does not mean anything if they are all executed so poorly that you would rather repeatedly shove a needle in your eye than play them...

It ultimately feels rushed and I get the feeling that Microsoft may have been desperate for a big name at release but there is no excuse for this. I know it also received rave reviews from certain magazines and people but I get the feeling that its people trying to get behind the xbox360 and support the release games, but come on now its been long enough we have enough great games to admit that our big release game was an abomination.

There are worse games I'm certain, I just really struggle to think of any...

Fantastic multiplayer will keep you playing for months

Really varied single player (including split screen co-op and co-op over live).

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Game   June 24, 2007

Now I have only played the original Perfect Dark on my N64 once and although it was good, I found it very hard at the time and soon lost interest in a way. However I heard that it's sequel available on the Xbox 360 was one of the best blast em up spy thrillers of recent years.

So after seeing this pre-owned at my local Blockbusters I decided to get it and those rumours are right. Although I have not yet completed the game, this is one hell of a blockbuster! You'll constantly find yourself pitted against the odds and dodging gunfire and explosions the size of the effifel tower. You'll find yourself piloting some cool vehicles as well. The graphics are great and gorgeous. There are also lots of nice touches as well such as when you shoot an enemy dead their bodies DO NOT dissappear for once!. There will be glass shattering, machine exploding mayhem galore. In fact there is so much action going on all at once, it makes Die Hard look like a girl scouts sunday picnic!

Buy this I strongly suggest you if you like James Bond-style games.

3 out of 5 stars Weak Campaign, great multiplayer   June 6, 2007

Perfect Dark Zero is a prequel to the N64 classic Perfect Dark. However, while still developed by Rare studios it shares very few of the original developers. It has also suffered for this, Perfect Dark Zero feels like a relic. A first person shooter from a different generation of consoles. It has no caught up with the fast paced Halo generation and doesn't really compete. The campaign is very weak, little ties the missions together except for a distracting voice briefing and the levels are often poorly designed with confusing objectives.

The strong side of the game is found in the greatly entertaining multipayer, using Xbox live Perfect Dark Zero is great fun. The maps are wonderfully well designed, the playing is smooth and the games are very fun. Unfortunately this is hampered by a glitch that affects many people only allowing them to match up with people randomly in games.

Perfect Dark is worth buying on the classics range, it is a fair shooter though its strengths lie in multiplayer.

4 out of 5 stars perfect dark (good for multiplayer split screen)   February 11, 2007

Perfect Dark offers a good multiplayer mode and a not so good single player mode. Multiplayer offers 5/6 different maps and 2 different vehicles. On multiplayer you can play against your friends on split screen and you can play against a bot. On multiplayer you have a wide range of weapons from pistols to rocket launches and you can get in two different vehicles, one is a jetpack that can fly and has a machine gun attached and the other is a hover craft that takes two people to use (one the machine gunner and the other a driver). single player offers different levels to unlock after you complete the level before that level and has lots of different weapons to pick up on your way. Although single player is not my fraviot bit of the game it is definitly worth the money for multiplayer.(does not have xbox live play)
