3 out of 5 stars like most games based on marvel comics   July 6, 2008
R. Mann (suffolk)
i thort i wudnt waste my money on buying the full game but download the demo from xbox live....i thort it was the same thing as other games, based on marvel comics and films; the videogames like spiderman or xmen or iron man are all very well and good for a while, you enjoy messing about, especially flying or webslinging around new york and places and even though in most of the games the graphics are a disaster..you enjoy destroying things. for the first time you play superman you realise the graphics are naff but you thing wow smashing stuff is good fun and flying is also fun...but without graphics you just give up after...about a week at most. so to summarise [for demo]:
gamplay - 6/10
graphics - 3/10
smashing stuff - 7/10
shelflife - 3/10
would not recommend this game, or at least the demo...which is a shame, cos the potential was ther for a really good game but let down by terrible graphics, this is not next generation gaming

If you can actually bring yourself to delve deeply into the world of "Superman Reurns: The Videogame", you may actually inadvertently unearth some potential. After all, the flying around an aesthetically (if not atmospherically) realistic city, throwing lamp-posts, burning cars and blowing people around is great fun...for about an hour.

After that, however, you are forced to confront the fact that you just spent 40 on a game that you'll never play again after turning it off for the third or fourth time. The "gameplay" is nonexistent, as is the storyline, while the fun factor quickly dwindles due to repetition. Just how many weakling robots can you force yourself to destroy (with consummate ease, I may add) before you gnaw your own arm off in frustration? You wait for the game to throw something entertaining at you, but it's in vain. Unless, of course, after the four hour mark - when I gave up - something magical happens, like for instance, the disk replaces itself with the hard earned cash you foolishly spent.

Don't but this game. Seriously. Just don't.

2 out of 5 stars Traded my old one in to buy this   July 6, 2007

Now I'll admit that I didn't have high hopes for this at all when I bought it (I traded my old PS2 one in with a load of other old PS2/Xbox games and decided to get this with the money I received).

I knew the graphics and detail would be much better, which is why I bought it, and that there is an extra island to explore. What I DIDN'T KNOW was that there were a few more mini games aside from the Bizzarro ones. Still this game is bland compared to the likes of Spiderman 3 and Just Cause (from what I've seen of the Xbox 360 version) but still I don't mind the odd occasion being Superman and now that I can play the Superman theme from my Xbox 360 memory well it feels like you are the man of steel himself in that way. However it is still repetitive (Fight robots, save people, fight more robots, save people etc) but you do have the option not having to deal with the crisises straightaway and just fly around the city, which is MUCH BETTER THAN THE PS2 ONE. I mean it's obvious it would be anyway but the PS2 version was a joke. It looked like lego!

Get this if you see it for a bargain price only. Otherwise get Spiderman 3.

4 out of 5 stars Superman Returns, if only he'd waited a bit longer   February 1, 2007

Superman Returns on XBOX 360 has a lot to live up to. The film was a true revolution in film making. Tie-in's have always been met with fear and often, later, disdain. Frankly this game is only for superman fans.

Gameplay: After about 1 hour, fighting the same bad guys again and again becomes cruel, and utterly boring. However, the sheer joy of blurrying through the clouds and in between the beautful cityscape of metropolis and the surrounding landscape cannot be matched (for fans) in any other game, least of all super-hero tie-ins. If you enjoy taking cars and lamposts into the 'miso-sphere' so to speak, dropping them and racing them down in an attempt to rekindle the epic plane rescue scene, then this game is truly entertaining/inspirational. However, if you can find it for less than retail price you'll do yourself a favour. If you do want to slug your way through the same fights over and over then it will take about 10 hours to complete the game, though there are one or two very cool levels where one has to overcome natural disasters. The graphics are great, the music is original, though due to the lack of the superman themetune, one will have to play that occasionally from a separate device for a truly orgasmic experience. The gameplay is awful, though the controls are very good and intuitive, free roam in 30 min bursts is the true fun of the game.

The cape sound affect is exactly the same as the one in the film, so if you love Superman Returns more than your friends think you should, do buy this.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been great, sadly lacking   January 23, 2007

The game, called Superman Returns implies it is based on the movie, so imagine my confusion when you're sent off to battle robots, dragons, and all sorts of other random alien creatures. Metropilis is a huge layout of a city, rather like Grand Theft Auto, so I was hoping that there would be lots of mini missions, perhaps fires springing up, robbers to stop, drowning people to save etc etc all of which you have to prioritise and get to as quicklyy as possible. If you were expecting this? It's nothing like it.
You hover above the city waiting for aliens to come in and cause havoc. You fly over, bash them about a bit, they disappear, then you just wait for the next set of exact same creatures to come back and you start again. The only mini mission of the game is that there are 100 lost kittens in the city that you need to find. Frankly if that's the only incentive to fly around the city then I can't be bothered.
Certainly the title is misleading as it is seems to be based on comic books rather than the film.
The potential for this game could have been much better so it's disappointing in that respect although still quite fun. Hopefully there will be another with improved gaming experience.
