4 out of 5 stars Online Genius, but flawed single player   July 8, 2008
Mr. C. Davies (wales)
No doubt this is a very good game, but it should not be getting 5 stars because it does have a number of flaws. For one, the single player game, while fun, the enemies are never ending - literally, its all about getting to the next checkpoint without dying, encouraging reckless running and gunning rather than skillfull gameplay, as if you simply pick off enemies they will just keep on coming. Also, the single player game is pretty short, and not much of a challenge for a FPS veteran.

The multiplayer is incredible, nothing else to be said, just incredible. But you do kind of get the feel it was designed as an online game, with a single player mode attached as an add on. Thats fine if they are clear about this, but if you dont have online access, dont expect a supreme one player experience like Half Life 2 or Bioshock, its not in the same league.

Basically, if you love online shooters, you have to own this, but if you want a one player game, there are lots of better options out there!

4 out of 5 stars AMAZING!....but not without it faults.   June 19, 2008
David Landreth (england)
Firstly id like to say, i LOVED this game as a whole.

the game-play is exciting and re-freshingly realistic, the characters are very well done (LOVE YOU GAZ!) the graphics are mind blowingly amazing.
the level where you use the ghili suits was a stroke of pure genius, and the best part is; it's a level DEDICATED to stealth not a level that decideds it wants to be stealth one second and a run-of-the-mill-shooter the other second.

the weapons are amazingly done and look very nice (me and my mp5) and best of all they are REAL, not some stupid future plazoka 9000. the red-dot sights on the guns are great too, this game makes you actually have to aim rather than a caffined up halo 3 fest of run, shoot, run, shoot.
you instantly fall in love with one gun or the next and will use it most of the time, for me and my flat mate it was the P90 and the MP5, silenced was great and to attach a red-dot sight to an already amazing gun....sorry lost track for a second.

the character models are done so well! it's had to belive they actually used LESS triangles for the models than they did in call of duty 2. The SAS look stunning in the black clothes and thier gas-mask uniforms, and the marines look great. they really did in my opinion (sorry if this offeneds anyone) a good idea of killing off the american guy you play as (sgt jackson or something) mainly because i was delighted when i found out the brits where going to be in this game, but in my heart i knew one thing "the americans will get the glory.....because they allways do in war games" but i was wrong, and happy to be.

now the praise has come and gone, i did however have a few issues with the game;

enemys seem to:

know EXACTLY where you are all the time
seem to have 'homeing grnades' at times....
have the amazing ability to sneek up behinde your entire squad
seem resistant to flash-bangs at times
have the ability to see through clouds of smoke at times
can throw a volly of grnades at you (like 5 or 6...we've all been there)
seem to only want to shoot you
can shoot you with an AK-47 from a huge distance and hit you spot on.

your team-mates:

seem to wait for a enemy to kill you before they decide to shoot him
have an amazing ability to never get shot when standing out in the open
will NEVER push forward unless you do
lack the common sence to throw away a grnade that lands next to them
never seem to kill anyone thats close to you, just the ones miles away
tend to ignor most enemys

But overall anyone looking to purchse this game will not be dissapointed ATALL.

xbox live Gtag is "wierd carrot" only "mile high club" to go! raaaaaawwww

add me if you fancy a game or two of cod 4 or TF2 or maybe halo 3 (if i can bare to play that sore excuse for a game)

2 out of 5 stars Great single player, frustrating online play   June 10, 2008

I bought COD 4 because i was told that it was far superior to Gears of War, i did agree with this...for about a day.

That first day i agreed was the day i played the single player campaign, it is a brilliant storyline with entertaining levels (My favourite bieng 'All Ghillied Up'), though the graphics could have been better i thought this was an excellent game.
Next day i decided to go online because i had finished the campaign. Oh how dissapointed i was. Now before i get attacked by other users sayin 'you're just bad at this game' i'm not, i completed my first prestige within a day. Let's start off with the so called 'realistic' gameplay that everyone seems to be using as a plus to the game. This game is anything but realistic, players run through bullets, grenades go off every 2 seconds, every dead body seems to drop a grenade. These are the main things that make the game so frustrating. How many people do you know can sprint through 3 bullets from an MP5 and then pull out a knife and stab you in the face? So that's the 'realistic' gameplay out the window. Now in my opinion, COD4 was given a mass amount of weapons without thinking of balancing the power or accuracy. Too many times i have been shot and killed by a single burst of the M16 after pumping 3 shots from the .50 cal sniper rifle. The Desert levels of the multiplayer are also incredibly biased to the Marine team, first of all they receive much better camoflauge than the opposing team, especiallt the sniper class, the iranians are given red berets! That sticks out like a sore thumb!
The majority of the maps are badly designed, usually giving one team an advantage over the other with either higher ground or more tactical positions.

Overall, the campaign is great, one of the best i've ever played, but the multiplayer ruins what could've been an iconic video game. Personally, i'll be sticking to Gears.

5 out of 5 stars You'll still be playing long after the missus has gone to bed...   June 3, 2008
S. Ryan (London, Uk)
This game is by and large exceptionally stunning. The graphics are incredible, even life like (check that Ghillie suit out!), HD however is a must to get the full experience and benefits - especially for focussing on targets at distance. The sounds are recycled from previous COD's but still sounds superb coming into a surround sound set up - even if it is Stereo and not true 5.1 as the xbox only outputs out in Stereo to an external amp using a dongle cable (available on Amazon). The story Gameplay was a thrill a minute kinda stuff, although the story in my opinion could have been 2-3 levels longer. Multiplayer- the good stuff! I've racked up 27,000 kills and 15 days of continuous play thanks to this game since November. Generally the online experience is exceptional as some of the players that you play against are very devious and accurate (hopefully you get these guys fighting alongside you) and will watch your back as you watch theirs - instilling some commaradary and some laughs; although sometimes you'll get frustrated by the American kids singing and generally making brash arses of themselves (if you have a headset). I have to stop harping on about this and get back to work, get the game, do it first - then go online for a fight! 10/10

4 out of 5 stars good game   May 22, 2008
neonflux (Manchester)
this game is probably one of the best FPS's around. the only reason i gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because the campaign is a little short.
