Average at best October 24, 2008 chuckles (Netherlands) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Saw this for 10 in the sale, and thought I could not lose. I have read the books and seen the film, so thought this could be fun. I have to say however I was quite dissappointed. The graphics look more like PS2 than next gen, and the game did not seem to flow, very clunky. Maybe the kids might like to play as their heroes from the game, but to be honest it's going to my trade-in pile I am afraid to say. Only gets 3 stars because of the new even lower price.
waste of money August 8, 2008 moggin (uk) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This a poor game based on a poor film adaptation of a fantastic book. The gameplay is dull and repetitive. The controls are frustrating. The puzzles are unimaginative. This game just annoyed me, I could not keep playing it. Life is too short to waste time on this game.
This Isn't Pure Gold. This Is A Setback! June 8, 2008 Mrs. Dawnc Alexandre (Jersey (CI)) There are only 2 reasons why I got this game and if the XBox 360 didn't do the achievement feature I wouldn't have got this game in the first place. The 2 reasons are Achievements, and Price. My brother found this game at www.play.com on a special offer for 9.99, and I asked him to get it and I'll pay for it since it would be another 1000 Points for my collection! The game is based on The Golden Compass film, which was released worldwide in Cinemas in late 2007. The movie broadcast was a big success, but on the other hand Sega decided to create the Video-Game Version of the game, and to be honest. It is just as bad as the Sonic The Hedgehog game they did for the Playstation 3 and the XBox 360 back in late 2006, which was a total shame! In The Golden Compass your game play is mostly involved with 2 characters, Iorek the Bear and Lyra the girl who is the main role in the movie! Iorek's game play is basically running around a large level and attacking a large sum of enemies with certain Claw Slash attacks, Bites and Grapple Attacks, so basically playing as Iorek is simple and easy. On the other hand, Lyra is a different story as she goes a little more further. In most occasions Lyra can be moved around as well, but she is mostly based in small areas and to help her travel, she takes along her best friend Pan, who is a Ferret but can also transform into a Monkey, a Hawk and a Wild Cat allowing Lyra to use special abilities that she couldn't do herself, for instance, swinging in circles around poles and climbing up walls! Eventually in the game as well Lyra is also given an Alethiometer, which has the ultimate ability to answer any question you ask it. It contains 36 Special Symbols. Each of these symbols contains 3 meanings. In each level you are in, you will have to use your sightings and Pan's Insight ability to search and obtain symbol meanings. The more symbols you collect, the more likely you'll succeed in an Alethiometer question challenge! The most annoying mode of all though with Lyra is the Deception games. In a Deception game you have a conversation with another person and you must quickly complete the mini-game it shows. If you successfully complete the mini-game you have a better conversation with the person, but if you fail, you will have a negative one! I found this game overall appalling and I was so glad to get 1000 Points in achievements when I finished this game. Playing, as Iorek is fine and understandable but playing as Lyra is boring. Another part of this game which is annoying is that it has a terrible save feature. The game only saves when you reach a certain checkpoint, or when you finish the level. So in order to keep the symbols you collect, you have to do one of the following. The XBox 360 Version of The Golden Compass game has 16 Achievements, giving you a total of 1000 Gamerscore Points. The game also has an Extras Menu as well and luckily enough, it is an offline game and no online play is required for multiplayer online achievements! My Personal Game Score: 4/10: Appalling, Revolting, Unworthy My Wish: A better save feature for the game and a more exciting plot with Lyra! Final Comments: Everybody on my friends list was asking me why the hell were you playing The Golden Compass on the XBox 360? And they were shocked to see me play this as they thought I would be hacking away on Gears Of War, Halo 3 or Grand Theft Auto 4! All I can say to you is avoid this game. I have seen worse than this game (Hour Of Victory), but I have been far much better than this! If you are willing to see my embarrassing competition of this game on my card, by all means, you are totally welcome to take a look. Here's my Gamer-Tag... BulgyDragonZord
Huge thumbs up, though one for the girls perhaps!!! February 1, 2008 K. Chadwick (Glos, UK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I really like this game and if you liked the Harry Potters, the Prince of Persias & Lara Crofts etc. you'll probably like this too. It has many levels, all different, so you don't get bored. Lyra has powers she can use through Pan (Climb/Dash, Glide, Insight & Whip) and these make the game interesting & fun. There are puzzles to solve (through interrogation in which you can use trickster cards etc), questions to decode & answer (by collecting symbols & trophies which you need to find), and battles to win (either by using the right buttons when prompted, or full-on attack on a polar bear's back!). There is plenty to keep the brain stimulated & the eye occupied! However, serious Halo players - this may not be your cup of tea! The only downfall is that you cannot save anywhere within the game, as it will autosave for you (to my knowledge), and in some cases if you don't complete the level by the time your partner wants to watch something on tv, you may have to replay the level again (but they are fairly short and you should fly through once you've completed it). :-)
