5 out of 5 stars Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires   October 6, 2007
M. Thomas (U.k)
I'm a die hard fan of the dynasty warriors series and i've played all the games over and over and i've noticed repetitive gameplay but i don't really care as long as it's fun for the 50th 100th and 1000th time

i've been playing dynast warriors since 2003 and i'm still impressed it never manages to bore me it's great for true story game lovers gamerscore junkies and sword fighting fans the game is based on chinese history in the times of 186-252 and i've found the story interesting

so my thoughts

Pro's
Great selection of characters
Attacks differ from weapon
So many different map layouts
Items are great stat affecters, orbs and harnesses
Soooooo many people to kill!

Cons
Lu bu always owns you on hard
5 Officers ganging up on you at once
Zuo ci is a stupid choice for a new character

and thats basically my review 5 out of 5

2 out of 5 stars The most repetetive game on the 360   February 13, 2007

I bought this game thinking that it would be a good, fun action game. Its not. The graphics are nice and realistic, but the gameplay is absymal. You just press the same buttons over and over again. The strategy element is a nice touch, but it isnt good enough to compensate for the main fighting element. The whole idea of the game is to conquer China and build up an empire. You can do this as several different people, but most of them have the same weapons and attacks, and just have different faces. There is no storyline, which is dissapointing, and the cut-scenes are awful. If you like fighting games, then I would recommend Samurai Warriors 2, which has a great storyline and brilliant cut-scenes.

3 out of 5 stars Another Dynasty Warriors Game   October 18, 2006

I'm a huge fan of the dynasty warriors series but i have never been able to get my hands on an "empires" game and i thought that as the new generation of gaming is in, then this is my chance to get an "empires" version of Dynasty Warriors and see what it's full potential is.

Firstly the fantastic story of Dynasty Warriors is ruled out as this is basically a attack anf defend territory game featuring the gameplay and characters from dynasty warriors. China is divided out on each campaign between different powers, including Coa Coa, Sun Jian etc and any can be chosen to use at your command which is great. The chance to finally play as about 200-300 characters from the franchise is a great asset. The aim of the campaign then is to build up an army, and take over China. Simple really.

The campaigns are divided up into 2 sections, the turn phase and the battle phase. The turn phase consists of positioning your army, increasing production, recruiting more troops and officers, building items etc. basically all the admin sort of stuff for the army. And second is the battle phase, where you will attack or defend territories dynasty warriors style.....well, kind of.

The battle system differs from the original games because this time the map is divided up into bases. Capture the enemy base by taking smaller bases and making a supply route towards it or kill the enemy commander. simple again but there is a lot of running through levels and not enough fighting. Troops are now not freely anywhere around the map, they are either with enemy officers or in bases which limits the amount of fun each level and limits the amount of kills compared to the original games.

Dont get me wrong, the new graphics are really good and when you get in between a swarm of enemies it is fun but this sort of thing happens not very often. Replay value in this game is also scarce, after playing the campaigns (which are not much different besides from 1 extra bonus mission) the game will become quite dull. After taking over Xia Pi castle 800 times using an officer which says to have 20000 troops but actually has about 10, it is quite frustrating to play.

If you are new to the franchise, please dont buy this, stick to the originals but if you are a fan and like repitition then buy it by all means.

Pros

+ New great graphics
+ Loads of characters to mess around with.
+ Any army is playable
+ Free mode again
+ A range of difficulties but the hardest is stupidly impossible.
+ Lots of RPG like leveling up with hundreds of characters

Cons

- Repetitive gameplay
- Not much variety in campaigns
- Battle system is awful
- Story abolished
- No challenge modes

5 out of 5 stars Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires   July 10, 2006

Well, the Dynasty Warriors series has been going for as long as man can remember, right? There have been the Beat em' Up style Dynasty Warriors (Dynasty Warriors 1 for anyone whos wondering), there have been the Hack n' Slash style Dynasty Warriors, there have even been vauge attempts at a Dynasty Warriors Tactics (Note: Do NOT buy...), and now, we have Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires.

This is not like any other Dynasty Warriors game ever released (except DW4: empires), this time round, you control an empire! In this newest installment of the Dynasty Warriors series there are 6 campaigns to complete, all different styles of play and different ways of approaching the game. you start off with a small amount of land (depending who you choose to be of course), once you have your land, you enter the "Strategic Phase" where you can command your commanders to do specific tasks, such as Promote Craft, which adds money to your treasury, Replenish, which regenerates your commanders troop levels. There are still some signs of the old Dynasty Warriors series here though, such as when you attack an enemy provance, you go into the good ol' Dynasty Warriors fighting mode, run around, bash buttons, feel proud of yourself for single handadly taking out 400 troops, rinse and repeat. Now, this most definatly isn't for everyone, but me, I cannot get enough of it.

So, to sum this game up, its fast paced, energetic and just outright fun, what more do you want for 24.99!?

Oh. and the achivevement are easy to unlock, so Gamer Score junkies this is for you.

3 out of 5 stars Addictive To Start With   July 8, 2006

I have never played a dynasty warriors game before i bought this, so by no means can i express the view of dynasty warrior addict.
When i first loaded the game up, I had to fathom what was going on in this game, there was a lot of guessing and confusion on my part, which you can put down to three things, in game menus not being as imformative as they should be, the manual not explaining details, and my lack of common sense!!

Upon realising the processes of the game I immersed myself in the main story mode 'empires'. The idea is very basic, pick a patch of land and then grow by invading neighbouring lands until eventually u control the whole of China. There are interesting side ideas like consulting your generals as to how to govern your lands but it becomes an annoying after two or so turns as you have to do this after every single battle, this game is all about the fighting after all.

As I've already hinted at the invading and battling is, and so it should be, the best part of the game, you can take wealth of items into battle with you from defense power-ups to a bengal tiger!! There are a lot of characters who all hone different weapons and styles, some styles you love and some chracters are just plain awful and best left with the computer to control. You win battles by scouring the map of the battlefield and taking enemies bases, the best part whould have to be when you meet other opposing generals, that who the hardest and most enjoyable fights are with. With any hardcore fighting game there are blistering special attacks which can be unleashed after, you've guessed it, filling up a bar. These special attacks become more powerful as your health runs low which doesnt leave the player feeling absolutely done for when his health is nearly gone!! The down sides in game include enemies that just ignore you and sometimes non appearing items that should appear when you kill a general or take a base. Apart from that the in game is solid and entirely playable, and very enjoyable when you see absolute choas on the battlefield!!

The fun comes to an abrupt end though when you realise there absolutely no variety in the empires mode, the four senarios I have unlocked so far are completely the same!! All you have then to turn to is the free mode which is useful for levelling up chracters and the create your own warrior mode.

They could have spent a bit more time on this game, I've reviewed this solely from the xbox 360 version, I've heard this is a straight conversion from the PS2, and it shows as it doesn't push the xbox 360 in any way.

All console specifications put aside this is an enjoyable game which you will at first intensely play and then return to once in a while to get your battlefield chaos fix!
