Ok, not quite but it's prety damn fun. Start off with a an old garage and some designs for concept cars. Work your way up gaining sales by winning races and then design more cars to race in other classes. It's similar to the story mode in Ridge Racer 4, but taken a step further. The graphics on this game are absolutely beutiful, probably the best I've seen in an Xbox title to date. Detailed tracks and excelent effects make every race a gorgeous visual feast.
The sound lets the game down somwhat. The sounds of vehicls crashing together are weak and almost laughable. The music also skips from time to time.
The races themselves are always action packed. Awsome track design makes this game for me. the tracks are split into 4 catagories: City, Track, Mountain and Speedway/Stadium. The mix of track types leads to a driving style that needs to be a little bit of Ridge Racer, Project Gotham and GT3.
The AI on the other cars can be frustrating at times, as they are quick to block you, and always come off better than you after an impact. The game uses the "Catchup" style of racing where you'll get an increase in acceleration when in a lower position, but the same is true of the AI, so there's lots of "pack racing" where the opponents are tightly huddled together. The down side of this is that the opponents are only a couple of bad corners behind you no matter how well you've been driving. Driving the entire race perfectly but blowing the last corner of the final lap will nearly always result in you coming in last.
Multiplayer is fun if a little limited. It's just 2 player head-head. You can choose any of the tracks and cars that you've unlocked from the main game. What it's missing however is the option to set up multiple races, change the settings of the cars (gearbox type and downforce) and even just changing the number of laps from 2.
Overall this is a fun title with good ideas and amazing graphics but flawed gameplay. It's worth getting, but it's not the perfect racing game I'd been hoping for.
Here's hoping that the sequil will be better.
