5 out of 5 stars A stratigical and fresh idea   March 31, 2005

Psi-opps is a great game, which really brings something new to the genre. The mind powers are really fun and it opens up a whole new dimension of the game. What I think was the best part to this game was all the different ways you good complete tasks, like the Hitman series. For instance, go around sneakily and knock everyone out, using silenced pistols to take out cameras, or go in guns galore or use your psycic powers and not lift a finger. It has a compelling storyline with well developed characters and a simple yet solid plot. It has a lot of extra levels, and being able to play as bosses allows you to use stronger powers, but after playing it through on elite, spending some time playing as the bosses and completing all the extra missions, you realise how short the game is, letting me complete it on the hardest difficulty in just over 4 hours. The ending leaves you wanting more, from the sequel which is so heavily suggested. A very good game which will see you to the end...I just can't wait to get stuck into the next, but if you can't wait give 2nd Sight a go.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting twist to spy games.   February 25, 2005

Mindgate takes a twist by introducing parapsychological powers for us to play with: telekinesis, pyrokinesis, mind control, remote viewing and aura view. These powers add a new level of gameplay, giving the player different ways which he/she can solve the puzzles and progress the mission. Of course, one can still blast our way through the levels, but the whole experience diminishes using this single-minded (heh, heh...) solution.

Graphics and sound are top notch, with lots of things to break and burn (using the HL2 engine has it advantages, right?).

My main problem is the arcade feel of some of the levels and the fantasy in the later ones... somehow, the story starts diverging from the real-world into a fantasy with very small connections to the reality. Having end-of-the-level bosses further increases this arcade feel, after all what's the use of having a real-world backstory if you're going to have fantasy monsters and alien caves?

Anyway, the bonus features on the disc are a plus, there should be more like these, with behind-the-scenes and unlockeable features... the DVD format was well used in this case.

In short, a different take on the spy shooters genre, well worht a try!

5 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect!   February 1, 2005

I usualy don't go "over the top" with many games, although this one's a perl. It brings a bunch of new ideas that are mad mad fun (for instance Mind Control!). The graphics are great, they have perfect round shapes, the fog, the fire... briliant! The dificulty level "can" at one time become frustrating (Marlene boss is not that well made because she has a strike that's un-avoidable: not cool!), but otherwise perfect - most of the time you're presented with a situation and have to figure out, using your abilities, how to supress them, and the situation vary a lot: from an ilusion maze, to finding out a code somewhere with your "Aura View", to "Mind Control" a dude to open some doors. Although it should be a bit longer, however, I manage to finish the game in 8 hours, but not including the many retries at Marlene's fight.
Midway is really doing great games. Cheers to them.

5 out of 5 stars the force is strong with this one!   January 12, 2005

What a fantastic game!

Think of a cross between Metal Gear Solid & some fx driven sci-fi motion picture and you have one entertaining game.

It has tonnes of extras too so you'll be playing this for a while.

Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Psi-Ops sneaks under the radar   October 18, 2004

This game has sneakily avoided my attention until recently. Perhaps it was some kind of mind drain, but as a psychology student, I am permitted to doubt that.
Psi-Ops is the most fun I have had playing (and I own a fair few games) since Halo. In fact, there are several elements, notably the mind control powers, were it exceeds in playability - a seriously tough prospect.

Those peculiar enough to enjoy pretending we had force powers when aged 7 (and that's about all adult men aged over 30) will enjoy this game on a profound psychological level. Forget those who worry about the game's violent content, we are mature enough to understand how little this matters to the decent, complient fellows we have all become.
This game unleashes the 'Force' ability, and provides a physics engine which will entrance and amaze the little boy in us.
Graphically, I was contantly impressed with the scale of some levels, and their commitment to realism. This game deserves your attention, the cheat subsystem (often neglected with games these days) is first class, and will ensure you return to this glorious gem of a game.
